Well a jolly warm hello from ground control.....That Bowie song always made me feel ill when i was younger, probably because i really did feel like i was "floating/sitting in a tin can" when i was racing along the country roads with the wind whistling through the unclosable windows in some banger of a car...
That song certainly doesnt make me feel ill now though, what a great artist Bowie is wouldnt you agree? even if he does have bad teeth!!!he is from uk after all....as am i and everyone knows we all have bad teeth!!!
There is some good music around at the moment but nothing will ever have the same excitement and thrillingness of the 60s when blues rock n roll and pop all first started to be heard widely, i can safely say that in my humble opinion the music that i have grown up with has been a rehash of something that has been before....with a few exceptions.
Why is it that no one feel they can make a difference any more?is it to do with the new found voice/confidence that music can provide for a generation?and we havent had one.....yet.
But we are the majority if enough people get together and make a noise about something they believe in or disagree surely someone will hear!
Sheep is what i feel like sometimes not to eat you understand... but as in the way they are all herded by some invisible force into silent imprisonment....and following the sheep in front of you isnt going to get you anywhere....just the knackers yard ...butchers.
So then is it all a waste of time trying to escape from the run or is there a revolution in the next field?
I think it is worth trying but there is so much to say and that is wrong where do you start....i propose that music is a good place, do you know a good inspiring band...what is their name share the wealth...
I am aware i have gone on a bit but i must say that i thoroughly enjoyed the shoots with abby and feel the site shows women better than most... and i am glad to be a part of it...
Look forward to your responses..if anyone wades through it all! Linseyxxx;)

Hi Linsey. I'm from the UK and the teeth I have left seem OK at the the moment (touchwood.:) )
Heres someone I found who's original and could be a bit challenging for some

I don't think theres a revolution around the corner but because of the internet theres a swift evolution taking place, which should culminate in people ditching their TV channels for internet 2 content. Which means we can set our own agenda. The hot topics in the news will be what ever we think is important ourselves, not a top down publicity machine.
well, thats my uneducated uninformed opinion anyway :)
Glad your enjoying your time in Oz. Your better off there, where its warm and sunny. I've just spent 2 hours in Swindon. How lucky am I :)

Linsey, within 24 hours of posting your thoughts you have had responses from around the corner and from around the globe. Baby, the revolution is here. And it's not a revolution of guns and bombs, it's the ability of people to connect without regard for physical space or time. Pretty freaky stuff and we have only seen the tip of the iceberg. There has never been such a medium for like-minded individuals to transcend physical limitations in the pursuit of common interests, ok, in this case a common interest in hot, naked girls, which hardly qualifies it for the Nobel Peace prize, although, when you think about it, if people spent more time wanking peacefully they'd have less time to start wars, so really, the AW models should think of themselves as ambassadors of peace.
Last item, I want you to know that the first, the #1 dl I made from this site, was your set. You beaut!

Hi Linsey!! Welcome to AW and the boards!!
Your post deserves alot of thought and response. I think, being one that was around back in the '60's, alot of things were kind of coming on the scene at the same time. One of the Beatles once said, I forgot which one, "We were just at the right place at the right time". If you look at their music, which kind of spans that period, they were only popular about 8-9 years and yet the music they played at the beginning of their band, sounded absolutely nothing like the music at the end. Popular music itself did just that. Now I know 9 years may seem like a long time to you now, but trust me it's not. ;)
Part of a difference too, is that during that time, there wasn't as many musical genre's competing with each other for the young persons dollar or whatever. There was no rap, "country" in the U.S. wasn't the musical force that it is today. Also in the U.S., which is where I live, the "black sound" at the time was dubbed "Motown". It was called that because it came out of Detroit where all the auto companies were, and Motown was short for "Motor town". (**By the way, if anyone can name the only caucasion to be signed by Motown, you get a double Platinum star. see at bottom for answer) If you look back on those billboard charts back then, Motown was on the same chart as the Beatles, as was Hendrix as was Zeppliln, etc. Also, there wasn't really any "oldies stations" like there are now although they would play oldies on the Top40 radio occassionaly. In other words, all of us kids kinda heard different types of music on the same stations. Whether that effected anything or not I don't know but that was a difference. By the '70's things began to change.
Some people in other areas of the U.S. might have had a different experience than mine.
The other thing too, that I see is that young folks simply have more outlets for their time. There were only 3 t.v. networks in the u.s. then. (Where I lived we only had 3 channels). There wasn't internet, video games, ipods, and as far as this goes, i much prefer the way things are now!!!:D
Without going any further on this, politics and social change was rapidly changing then and made for an exciting time.
Accept for music progressing and maybe cars, I really think most people in the "west" are better off now than we were then. At least I"M better off. (So I naturally assume everyone else is! HAHA)
to blissed: I sincerely hope you are right and to big extent, I already do that now with getting the news. I get virtually all my news day-to-day from the internet, and get it from the wire services from the U.S., Australia, and U.K. The only time I watch the news on t.v. is when there is a story that I have called "having visual immediacy" where it's an event that is happening in real time and has real importance.
Having said that, I hope the Internet 2 hurries up because the governments and business will want to co-oped the internet if we don't prevent it. On this I'm not a conspiracy nut. This is true, I hear something new every week along these lines. Last week, I read about the cable companies wanting to allow large companies' website to have more bandwidth than other web sites, this way their sites would have much faster response times than your averange site. That way they could charge for the extra bandwith. Of course, that strikes against everything the internet is about. My caution is that just because something is technically possible, it may not happen, particularly if current large companies don't see a reason to get on board the wagon.
Enough from me about this stuff. Anyway...... thanks for posting Linsey. "This isn't your daddy's porn site."

Hi Linsey,
Very interesting thoughts. I think there are a lot of people that can make a difference and that want to. They will make it through music and I think by example (http://www.famous-quotes-and-quotations.com/gandhi-quotes.html) (see #4 & #5).
The internet will be an important part of those changes. Sharing and communication goes a long way to removing prejudices and fostering cooperation. Thanks for your thoughts. It is gratifying to hear such from the "younger generation"

Hi Linsey,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on current culture, especially music, and its difference from what was going on in the 60's and '70's. You're quite right - so much of what is now broadcast is literally a rehash, ie. if not a direct cover of a song released decades ago, then a blatant sampling. So a modern pop song is a hit with a catchy riff....if only the current young folk only knew it was an Elvis Costello riff from way back, etc.
I've discussed this whole thing at length with friends, and wondered about it, but I fear there isn't an Answer. I guess the main thing is that we're aware of it, and discussing it. I take heart from the fact that a young woman like yourself is concerned about it. Hey, I'm not even old enough to have heard songs in the early 60's, yet I want to discover them and their magic. It's kinda like a regressive (progressive?) nostalgia, or something. But it's wonderful.
If we believe in Cycles, the wheel will turn at some point, and maybe we'll have some kind of cultural renaissance. Maybe it's even happening now, without us realizing?
Sorry I've gone on this long. I hope I was on the right track.
Btw, you're beautiful, and your pictures are fantastic. Keep smiling!

Hi Linsey,
Great post! There have not been many things as world changing as the music that came out of the UK and US during the 60's.
Hopefully the pendulum is swinging from bland corporate Top 40, Idol/pop stuff, to more substantive rock.
Coldplay, who is popular as hell right now, did a show on the PBS 'Austin City Limits' show that was pretty good! On the show they dedicated a couple of songs to Johnny Cash. They did a song "Til Kingdom Comes" that they wrote for Cash and they did a cover of 'Ring Of Fire'.
So, I think there is a trend to return to the musical roots of blues, folk, and R&B.
Last item, you're a very lovely girl! Keep posting!

Wow what thoughtful minds we have out there....and i would expect nothing less from AW viewers.
Yes the internet certainly does seem to have revolutionalised the whole world and the feeling that we are all much closer and with common needs and desires. It has been great to read all of the comments posted by people from all over the planet...amazing.
I must say that when i was asked to name an artist that was political of my generation......i was stuck, i thought of Chris Martin from Coldplay...he does alot in public to speak out about fairtrade issues and debt too, it is a thought i have quite alot ...why dont "stars" or not many at least use their fame and profile to do something worthhile, with the media so readily waiting for their every move and it being such a huge tool in manipulating minds..you would think they wouldve caught on...
maybe they are scared of what could happen to their pockets? having said that i recently saw a Madonna documentary which was quite close to the mark....she was trying in her own unique dancy way of getting across to her audiences that things can be changed and there was alot of antibush in there too...also alot of gyrating hips and feverish brows!
it is true some people try, good.i heard a "rock against bush" thing i think its mostly punk stuff, NOFX etc but its all very politicalput it in google...
got to post this as my stupid computer keeps disconnecting!
right then au revoir until the next input....keep it coming!!

A friend of mine that is in this generations age told me of a band called System of a Down, that has a song called Soldier Side, on their Hypnotize cd. I found it on the new napster and since she sent me the typed lyrics, I listened and it is very good.
One style of music that was popular back in the '60's was folk music and I searched napster on Joan Baez and found a song she and Bob Dylan sang at the Newport folk festival called, "With God on Our Side". Just an exceptional song that I had never heard before.
Valerie, thanks so much for the post! I have bookmarked the site and can't wait to hear it.

Hi Alleyes, there is another song by Dylan around that time - 'Masters of War' - which is as relevant today as it was over 40 years ago. If you are looking for a very accurate and never heard before compilation of Dylan's live performances, I can really recommend you 'No Direction Home' the soundtrack of a Martin Scorsese doku film about Dylan with songs from 1959 to 1966.

I like some of Spearhead's stuff, but I really liked a group he was in before Spearhead called Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. I only have one of their CDs, "Hypocrisy is the Greatest Luxury" (and it may be their only one.) It includes two great tracks, "Television, the drug of the nation" and "Language of Violence" and a few other good ones.
I could go on and on about music, but don't have time to get into it now. I did post this (http://forums.abbywinters.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?postid=48357#post48357) in a thread on favourite bands/singers which has gone dormant again. It sums up some of my faves.
I do think there is not as much innovation going on these days, but some of the imitations ain't so bad. BTW, I always used to get annoyed by the song you refer to in the subject of this post, Linsey, but for highly personal reasons.

Linsey,
I found some lyrics from a group called Steppenwolf. If you have heard of them at all, you probably would know of the songs Magic Carpet Ride or Born To Be Wild. Anyway, here is some lyrics that try to say the same thing YOU said. This was circa approx. 1968 Partial lyrics from the song, "The Ostrich". Written by John Kay.
"But there's nothing you and I can do
You and I are only two
What's right and wrong is hard to say
Forget about it for today
We'll stick our heads into the sand
Just pretend that all is grand
Then hope that everything turns out ok
You're free to speak your mind my friend
As long as you agree with me
Don't criticize the father land
Or those who shape your destiny
'Cause if you do
You'll lose your job your mind and all the friends you knew
We'll send out all our boys in blue
They'll find a way to silence you"

linsey,
check out the "Space...the final frontier" thread. I posted there earlier today about a non-person craft that will deliver a module that contains "comet dust" this coming sunday. Your questions about what's out there we all want to know. When you look at the earth and then look at what we know of the universe we do seem so insignificant. But the puzzle is, you're not insignficant and neither am I. And we're just two people. I say remember now, like my generation remembers, the '60's, and pass your understanding of todays discoverys and liberating songs to YOUR kids.
(Remember "Teach Your Children", by Crosby,Stills,Nash, and Young??)
Sometimes we need to hear songs, reflecting the spirit, but is sung today. Try listiening to a song called "Drops of Jupiter" by a group called Train.

Apologies to anyone who isn't with Ishotmyself (you get far less variety there, it just focuses on self photo/videography) but I think this is the stand out shot from Fraggle. A lot of the close in views, are what you see, just before your drawn in to touch someone, and when you see those pictures your really the only other person there, so they feel very intimate.
Is there intelligent life in the universe? that's a bit of a tough question. My hunch is yes but distances are so vast you'd need to use quantum entanglement to reach it. Travelling at the speed of light is just far too slow.
I know your interested in Political bands and they can be good if their headlining, where everyone has come to see them and it's a sort of celebration of all their about. Though I once saw Chumbawumba at Winchester festival and it was a bit like a 125 decibel sermon with no chance to take issue with what they were saying, and because I've usually got too much to say about everything anyway, I found it frustrating and annoying, I got angry, and threw all my toys out the pram :)
I think that's how politics is, and that's why thankfully it's banned here, because it's usually about bickering. I like to generally look at issues from a personal standpoint, then instead of people telling you what they think somebody else should be doing about something, they have to say what their doing about it themselves. There, That's my little sermon. and I think I've now definitely proved I've got too much to say about everything :)

Hello there, hope all is well, i am currently watching a program about iraq- the unjustified war. its Martin Bell i have to admit who i have not heard of before....its so difficult for people like me who do care but who dont have a great knowledge of what is going on in the world...i feel frustrated because i say i care but do i????im not reading everything i can ...not finding out what i can do to help i pakistan, in an argument all i could say is that i dont feel we should have declared war on iraq because we dont understand the iraqui system and attitude....and that bombing them is not going to change anything....let alone for the better....we shouldnt have been swept along by Bush, i went on the anti war march in London which was an amazing feeling...but what did it achieve.?
its still going on and we are making things worse not better...what does everyone else feel?
on a lighter note....yes it is "Desire" i was listening to ...a great album, i do like one more cup of coffee but Mozambique annoys me a little...something about it just grates against my flow!
i love jimi he is magnificent what a loss...him and Janis, Buddy Holly, so many died so young..im sure they would all have alot to say....what about John Lennon.?
Martin Bell on TV is just talking about all of the warfare computer games that exist....how do people expect people to grow up sane in world where killing people is portrayed as being "fun"..."we cannot afford a future like our past"
a brave man i think.
sorry for the slightly uneducated writing...but y'know..

Nice to hear from you again Linsey,
There are loads of people in Iraq just like us. They want to go to college, make money, have friends, have fun and live their life in their own way. So without telling other people what we think they should be doing, What can we do.
We can talk to them in bloggs and chat and message boards to show that we are not the enemy. That's how I think conflicts can be resolved if people connect, then respect each others differences. If you like communicating on the net. Google "Iraq or Afghanistan blogg" and start chatting.
I hope that doesn't sound harsh, I'm in a bit of a funny mood.

Oh Linsey, dear
you are touching me deep inside my rock'n roll heart. Yes they all died way too young....Jimi, Janis, John, Jim(Morrison)...to name but the ones with 'J'. I really would like to know what they all had to offer TODAY. There is one thing for sure: they all would be in their mid sixties! Probably, but not for sure, they would have been settled down and show up from time to time on Greatest Hits Tours (like the Rolling Stones). Which is not bad, but has nothing to do with the revolutionary kind of impact they all had on the music we love so much. There is nothing like the original ! Let's play Lennons 'Working class hero' or The Doors' 'The end' and let the memories or phantasies float away.......

Sadly, it's almost certainly better that they died young.
I'd be moved to manslaughter if I ever saw a 55 year old Joplin singing in a Mercedez commercial, even if it was only for booze money. Neil Young may be an exception, but he's still right:

I don't mean to hijack your thread but I heard a song on the radio today that was an old '60's song, and it's a funny song, and I thought I'd mention it to you. Unfortunately they didn't say the song title or the artist even though it's been around for ages. I'm asking my "fellow" abby members who thrive on this kind of stuff to tell me the name of the song and the artist who sang it.
Some of the lyrics go, "Boys will be girls and girls will be boys, it's a mixed up world, <something somthing> Lola
Any hints? Anyway, if they come up with it, it IS '60's song linsey and it's funny.

David Bowie, Marc Bolan, Freddie Mercury, Boy George, Prince.....the list is loooong never really realised before also the songs about girls being boys boys being girls are quite popular...Blur, Kinks...who else and why do you think this is?

i was wondering if anyone has itunes or something similar, could they search and find out if Lola by the Kinks is available there. It drives me crazy that when I"m willing to buy a song on the internet and I can't even find it!!!!!! :(

It is on i-tunes, but there are only two versions: a short live ver. and a longer live version that I used to have on vinyl (I might still have that somewhere in my Dad's basement - I didn't purge all the 70's out of my vinyl when I was turned onto punk.) I remember that version getting some airplay when it was released back in the early 80's. I saw the Kinks on tour after that live album came out ... the opening act? John Cougar, when he had one hit single "I Need a Lover" and was a far cry from the singer/songwriter he has become. Go Hoosiers!

Elvis fit this category, too. He had a gentle way about him ... or so I've read. As to why, maybe because it's safe ...? ... not all girls like bad boys. Don't forget all the hair metal bands from the 80's: bad boys who looked like girls.

I would agree with this statement ... but I also think there are exceptions to every generalization. Why do so many women have gay male friends who they wish were straight ... not unlike guys trying to seduce lesbians but they tend to operate under the assumption that lesbians wouldn't be lesbians if they had really good sex with a man -- silly men

I have the entire original series on Video. I would replace the vids with the DVD's that have now been issued but that would cost a lot of money ... I liked all the other Star Trek series, but the first is still the best IMO.
btw: I was on a first date with a friend of a friend (we had met before but happened to arrange the date without the help of the friend -- both of us were on match.com and I recognized her.) We went out for a Friday fish fry, a Milwaukee tradition and for some reason, we started talking about star trek and she mentioned she had never seen "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" my very most favourite Trek movie. So I had to invite her back to my place and after watching it, we started making out. When I put on the soundtrack to "Living Out Loud" which included "At Last" by Etta James, she got really turned on and things progressed rather quickly to the bedroom. It was a short but sweet affair ...
OK, I said I was going to stop telling stories like that, but I thought since it involved music, sex and star trek you would appreciate it, linsey :)

Letting my Geek flag fly even more -- Here's some useless Star Trek movie trivia ... the late Jerry Goldsmith wrote the score for "Star Trek: the Motion Picture" and James Horner scored "Wrath of Khan". What other science fiction film series did these two composers work back to back on with Goldsmith again doing the first film?
p.s. - "Star Trek: the Motion Picture" totally sucked when it was released in theatres, but I recommend checking out the "Director's Edition" DVD where Robert Wise explains why it sucked and redeems himself with a much improved version.

Uhh, that would be Alien and the sequel Aliens... Uh oh, what do I win?? :o The mantle of Lord High Geektitude?
Goldsmith was a master composer... and whatever you thought of the original Star Trek film, the music was amazing. He also did Basic Instinct, which, again, whatever you think of the movie (I like it), the music is terrific. I think he also did the theme to the Waltons tv show (neat), and Planet of the Apes (the originial movie... way out there, but cool). He could do it all...
Horner, although I like the music to WK, seems to have gone really Hollywood cliche. He made millions on the Titanic soundtrack, which, I'm sorry people, that was a lousy movie and a sappy soundtrack. Outside Kate Winslett's nude sketch and some admittedly impressive special effects, there wasn't much to it!

Linsey, you must see Mick sometime in "The Man from Elysian Fields," where he plays a high class gigilo, in a restrained, low key performance. It's amazing to see him in a clean, well appointed suit doing a low key role! He's got great screen presence, even as he ages.

i think it is my duty to start a Star Trek thread probably in the mundane chatter bit...it was a particularly good one starring Neelix.(Voyager) there was an evil man forgotten his name but he was evil, now good trying to help restore neelix's fellow telaxians who were vaporised by a huge cloud thing....ooh its great,
over to mundane chatter and then out.ha.

Hi matchless, i agree if you watch that movie now it seems a bit slow. When it came out however, myself and all the trekky friends I knew were extremely excited about it. I remember reading a paperback book around 1974 or so that was about star trek and had a chapter on "Would star trek return?" I was very anxiously hoping that they would bring star trek back and when the movie came out, the long scene in the beginning where they verrrrrrry slowwwwwwly show the exterior of the enterprise, saw my jaw drop i was so excited to see that old bird again. Thankfully, it was all a success and have had many fans since that time. :)

Hi linsey, hi all and alleyes :) Sorry I was not able to hand out a prize to Excelsior, but I was having computer problems. It took four days and a new modem and three hours or so on the Mac help-line. btw, the Mac help-line is located in Canada and both women who tried to help sounded lovely. What is it about Canadian women ...? ;)
One comment in reply to Excelsior's comments: I don't like James Horner's work now as much now as I used to. I did like "Titanic" the movie and the soundtrack - the movie was helped immensely by the score IMO. I think Horner was at his prime in the late 80's with "Field of Dreams" and "Glory". One last word on movie composers: my new favourite is Thomas Newman. First noticed his work in "American Beauty", went back and realized he also did "Shawshank Redemption", appreciated him more in "Road to Perdition" and "Finding Nemo". Considering his genes, I expect great things long into the future.
Linsey, thanks for starting the "Star Trek" thread while I was offline ... I have a lot to catch up on. I was wondering something, if you don't mind my asking ... how does an English woman end up with a Canadian bf who is now living in Australia? Where did you meet, how did he end up down under, and how do you keep it going while long distance? I know that's a lot personal questions so if you don't want to answer, don't feel pressured. I've been in a few long distance relationships myself and wouldn't rule it out again if I had to consider it ... I'm just interested in everybody's love stories, especially ones fraught with such challenges as yours.

Yeah, matchless, Thomas Newman's work is extremely good... and I agree that Horner's work did peak at the time you mentioned. I guess the other superlative composers would be Gabriel Yared (whose done Anthony Minghella's movies: English Patient, Cold Mountain, Talented Mr. Ripley, and many other fine, distinguished scores), with James Newton Howard (whom I know primarily through Sixth Sense, and A Perfect Murder) a solid third.

O, and while we're on the subject... been listening to Bernard Herrman scores, Vertigo especially, but also a damn good one (his last) for Taxi Driver... It's amazing that the same man could compose for Orson Welles (Citizen Kane), Alfred Hitchcock, then early Martin Scorsesee... and nail the score each time. Very temperamental guy... but talented...

It was perfect for ten months, then I just couldn't get online. It was so funny when we actually found the fix. I'm still not sure what was wrong or how things went wrong, but it's fixed so I'm happy :)
p.s. - maybe we should start a new thread for film composers ... we have the music and sex thread, so why not? But please don't move these posts to a new thread as that would mean moving my question to linsey, too.

Hi Linsey, hope you have a great time again in Oz. Nice having you back. That feels a bit weird saying that seeing as I happen to be in England :) Anyway, I like life drawing. Did you get pins and needles modelling at art college. I did it once clothed and that's what happened to me, and I felt realy stiff.
doinel you can send me some of that snow. We haven't had any this year. I wouldn't mind even a dusting of snow, so I can make even a tiny snowman. It'd be better than nothing.
Linsey you don't need me to tell you it's bloody freezing here. What are the winters like in Melbourne. Do you get extremes of cold to balance out the summer heat or is it mild.
