hey dudes, how are you all>? just thought id drop a quick line in between classes. my computer is having 'troubles', and is not speaking to me, so i may have limited access to the internet for a while, i apologise in advance for late replies. also, im lazy. ok, so i guess i should say something about myself eh? for anyone who hasnt seen my vid or profile, i study nursing and midwifery- and am going slightly mental at the moment, i am so busy- just started third year, which is getting all serious and scary, and am working weekends, trying to save for band tickets, bills and food (in order of importance!).
nursing and mid is a challanging course, particularily for the girl who had her heart set on arts/languages until just near the end of year 12, when she inexplicably changed her mind. i'm glad i did though, cos although the coursework/theory is tough, speshly for a left-brained, creative kinda person (think subjects like anatomy, physiology, pathology) the practical aspect (working on wards in hospitals) is fantastic. delivered my first baby at the end of last year! it was amazing- true, watching babies being born may not be everyone's cup o' tea, but i love it- babies are awesome, like beautiful, weird little aliens. i dig the nursing component too- am now completly unfazed by blood, guts and bodily fluids!
i can't remember if i said it in my videos, but i love listening to music- mainly metal (there is a band called opeth touring soon which i want to see) but also older stuff like dylan, led zeps, pink floyd, sex pistols, the clash, the rolling stones- who also might be touring soon, and for whom i would sell my soul for a ticket. saw megadeth play last year, the best gig i've been too, they blew my mind. i reckon iron maiden could give them a run for their money, but the bastards won't tour australia, damn their unholy talent. lately i've been listening to alot of blue oyster cult, children of bodom, iced earth, kreator....and a band called 'finntroll'...sort of folk/power metal, they are awesome...
just finished an awesome book, 'anasi boys' by neil gaiman- can anyone recommend me a good book? i dig authors like terry pratchett, chuck palahniuk, philip k dick...anythin in the genre of weird/sci-fi/fentasy/mindf**k. (can you swear on these forums?) i also recently quit smoking, for good. i wasnt smoking for long, but it was hard to give up, considering nearly all my friends smoke, i go and see bands in smoky pubs, and when i work, pretty much all the nurses smoke (and get on the piss too, but fair a-freakin-nuff, our job is bloody hard, physically and mentally)
as the lead guy from the stranglers said (whose name has briefly escaped me) 'rock stars are like nurses- we work hard, we play hard'
on that note, im off to class to fill my brain with important facts, or possibly have a snooze on the desk.
see you round like a record dudes
marigold
ps- i think some of you didnt like my nipple ring- you will be happy to know i took it out months ago- it kept getting caught on my clothes. my lip ring is gone too, wasnt allowed to wear it at work.

Welcome to the forums, Marigold!
Thank you for posting all the interesting information. I've never been much of a punk fan myself, but I do love the Clash, and believe they deserve the title The Only Band that Matters. White Man (in Hammersmith Palace) might be my favorite song of all time... unless it's Magnificent Seven. Sex Pistols are way cool too, and i love playing Anarchy in the UK for kids who think the crap they play on clearchannel radio these days is punk.
While it's not quite mindfuck (yes, you can swear :) ) material, I doubt you can go wrong with Arthur C. Clarke when it comes to Sci-fi. 2001 has always been a favorite of mine, book and movie. (Yes, the book is much less boring than the film).
Take care, look around, and enjoy the boards!

Oh, almost forgot. Be sure to drop the lovely Gabrielle a line on her thread here (http://forums.abbywinters.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=4216) .
She might be an even bigger fan of yours than I am. Together, we'll start the Marigold fanclub!

Hey hun, welcome to the boards. it's so cool that you're doing midwifery, I wanted to do that for a while in high school but I'm too squeamish. Is there a lot of ick going on? I can't handle blood or vomiting very well, hehe, so I kind of figured screaming mothers might be a bit much....

hey, woah...replies! awesome guys, thanks for everyone who replied. just been out for tea with my folks at a poonsy resteraunt- had ox tongue, which is actually quite nice, sort of like bacon. honestly, as i get older, i find i pretty much like any kind of food- i mean, as a kid i was a pretty adventurous eater, but there was certain stuff i didn't dig as much, like onions or brussels sprouts- nowadays, ill eat bloody anything, as long as its not poison....except for my arch-enemy, bananas.ergg. i think it come of being a uni student. free meal equals good meal.
your BF sounds like he has good taste in music paula! did he see the megadeth concert? i had a shoe-shaped bruise on my tummy from being stepped on, and my jeans got ripped to shit, always a sign of a good gig! no, i don't think opeth tix are sold out (fingers crossed) cos if they are i will have to get ANGRY. my fault really, for being lazy and broke. christiana- yeah its fucken hard quitting smoking- had quite a few false starts myself. but i just felt so shit the morning after a big night out and smoking, like, an entire freaking pack (plus i smoked clovies, which are evily strong) that i decided enough was enough. it was hardest went i went out drinking, you just feel like you should have a smoke in the other hand. i substituted it with chips (gum didnt work for me, but apparently patches are good. dont try smoking 2's or 1's though. they are like smoking air.)
yeah gracie, midwifery can be pretty gruesome at times, but you get used to it, and the end product is amazing. it reinforced to me how god damn strong women are- birth is something like the worst and best experience of your life. power to chicks man! and so many guys see their lady in a different light, just how much she is capable of. its beautiful pain. although, there is the option of drugs like pethidine or nitrous, and an epidural is amazing, numbs women from the chest down. manny women i have seen scream and yell, understadably- some curse, or tell their hubands things like 'why did you do this to me you fucking arsehole?!', but when bubs is born they are so amazed and happy. of course, ive seen some fucking sad stuff happen, but thats the way it goes, i suppose....it can be a bit emotionally up and down...
to jvak- i have read 2001, cool book for sure, and yes, the clash rule! as do the stranglers, the ramones, anthrax, judas priest, manowar, hammerfall, and so many other bands i would go insane naming them all. i think i would curl up and die without music (although i could do without shite music) you like any metal bands?
i shall go and read everone's profile so's i know more about them.
hello to gabrielle, think im cute eh? hehe, shoulda seen me last weekend, passed out in the garden, not a pretty sight i have to say..you and jvak make me blush with your compliments! :o i shall def check your thread out!
anyways, signing off for now

Yeah I don't think I could handle the sad stuff, either, even if I did get used to the gory part. And man, if I ever get pregnant, it is epidural ALL the way. I think I'll start mine at about 7 months. ;)

Hi, Marigold,
I love your posts, very entertaining, though it's a little hard to keep up with them. Have you ever heard of paragraphs? :)
My recommendation for a book for a science fiction lover... *any* book of short stories by Ray Bradbury. I am awestruck by everything of his that I've read. I'm also thinking that a book of short stories would be perfect for a busy lady like you.
I think I've read every book that Pratchett ever wrote, he's my favorite.
The things you talk about... I'm still trying to wrap my mind around your description of Finntroll - "sort of folk/power metal". I can't imagine. I made a list of every band you've mentioned and I'll try to sample each one.
It's a shame they don't let you list erotica on Ebay. I'm sure that if you put your nipple ring up for auction -- "worn by Marigold of Abbywinters.com" -- you'd make a fortune. :)

BWAHAHAHAHA!
Reminds me of my wife's experience with our first son.
The day before delivery: I want it to be natural, no drugs.
The day of delivery: GIVE! ME! MY! EPIDURAL!

Hi Marigold
It’s so great to hear from you. <3
Is studying nursing anything like on scrubs? :D
How much practical work do you get to do in a normal week or is it mainly theory?
This may be a typical guy question or just a Dave one but why do some women not want drugs during child birth, everybody knows painful it can be and most people try to avoid pain.
Do you have any plans to do any more shoots and of course congratulations on quitting smoking.

Hi Marigold
bananas are one of my favourites, you don't know what your missing :)
Theres a public places smoking ban in Melbourne in July (I think) it'll be easier for people to give up then with out having lighted fags waved around in front of them every time they go out.
Oh I think midwifery's got to be the best type of nursing too. It's nearly always happy. I like the general atmosphere in hospitals, they seem like good places to work, but I couldn't handle the exactitude. I make lots of tiny mistakes at work, I think putting somebody's life in my hands would be a very big mistake :) I'm a bit too left brained. Good on you if you can get it all right though. I think thats great.

I did like I said, I made a list of every band you mentioned.
You are into some really really heavy metal, aren't you, you minx! Here are the ones I could find...
The group Finntroll that you mentioned is crazy! An eclectic mix of metal, death metal, progressive, and Finnish folk tunes. That's what you were talking about!
Children of Bodom - heavy metal with screaming vocals.
Kreator - heavy metal with screaming vocal.
Manowar - dance/trance
Opeth and the Stranglers are rather tame indie rock and the Ramones are the Ramones.
Whatagirl! Some great stuff there. I think Finntroll and the Stranglers are my favorites.

Sounds like you enjoy a little punk here and there :) . If you haven't yet, I'd give the Pixies a try. Great stuff.
I never really got into metal music. My taste varies a good deal, but in general I lean towards old-sad-bastard stuff, like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Johnny Cash, Daniel Johnston... on and on ad infinitum. I remember loving an album by a borderline metal band called Bif Naked in high school, but never followed them after the first album. I'm always looking for good music though, so I'd be greatful for any recomendations you might have. (But be gentle; I'm more or less a metal virgin).
As for your level of cuteness while passed out in the garden, well... I'll take your word for it that you weren't looking your best that evening, but I have no doubt the flowers hid their blossoms in secret shame, their brilliant colors seeming dull and bleak next to your radiance. :D
Take care,
Jvak

hey everyone....what a warm god damn day it has been....i wish i was a little penguin living at the south pole....
yes, i do understand the meaning of paragraphs, i was just trying to freak everyone out with my non-conformist nature. death to paragraphs i say!! nah, kidding, i'll try to be a bit more reader-friendly this time, sorry :(
to arsby- finntroll are a band i have just been getting into recently...if you dig them, try rhapsody, or helloween, or advantagia. not read any ray bradbury, shall have to give him a go..pratchett sure rocks eh?! since i have to drive alot for my job (i get sent to lots o' different places) i even found some pratchett on tape, awesome for boring peak-hour-traffic.
never heard of opeth described of as 'tame indie rock'....honestly man, listen to an album called 'still life' and you might change your mind. love the stranglers tho, heard 'peaches', or 'golden brown'?
as for epidurals, to anyone who has commented- no matter what, every single woman i see is amazingly strong- she just may handle the birth process in different ways. having a natural, no-drugs birth is great, but at the same time, if you want an epidural, then fucking get one- it's your choice, and it shouldnt detract from the birth experience at all. birth is different for everyone!
to darth dave, thanks for congrats on quitting, i don't often get that. yeah, you would think every woman would have drugs during birth (although if you have ever seen an epidural inserted- through the spinal cord with a needle- then you might change your mind. most of the time, women are too pre-occupied with labour pain to worry about a silly little needle...:) ) but a natural birth can be cool as well. its pretty much up to the women (i mean, it's her body yeah?)
i have seen a water birth (baby is born underwater in a bath or pool)...amazing experience. we do lots of practical work for my course....i think i learn more working at hospital then studying at uni tho...hehe, most nurses would say no, nursing is not like scrubs, but i reckon there is almost as much drama...
i have always wanted to be an author, and i think nursing would give me heaps of material... what about you darth dave? how is your course going?
to jvak, i dig the pixies, and love neil young, his stuff is amazing... have you heard tom waits? i love musicians with original, crazy voices, like waits, dylan, and young. makes me get shivers down my spine when i listen!!!
must be offski again

Yes, I do know Tom Waits, and love him. His early, piano-lounge singer stuff sure is pretty, but I really like his work from Swordfishtrombones on, when his lyrics were more beat-poet and the music became more experimental. "Going out West" is the best driving song I've ever heard: makes me want to jump in my car, roll down the windows, and spend all night flying though the desert. If you like the crazy voices (and don't mind odd music with it) I'd check out Captain Beefheart. Trout Mask Replica is the best album, but a little difficult to get into. Either way, he has the most amazing blues voice there's ever been on the white side of Howlin' Wolf.
It may be hard to find there (in fact, it's pretty hard to find in America, unless you're in Texas) but Daniel Johnston has a very odd, very original, and very unique voice. 9 out of 10 people will dismiss it within thirty seconds (because, I admit, he does sound like a slightly autistic kid with a cheap keyboard, a bad mic, and bipolar disorder) but there's something hauntingly beautiful there, so for the few that do like him it's like falling in love.

Oh lord, can't believe I forgot about him! I'd guess from your lists that you've already read a bunch of his stuff, but if for some reason you haven't, start reading Kurt Vonnegut right now! Cat's Cradle, Sirens of Titan, Slaughterhouse Five, Breakfast of Champions, Timequake, Player Piano, Mother Night... I doubt life would be bareable if not for Vonnegut.

Hey Jvak I agree with you about the Captain (it's a marvel that anyone remembers him at all!). I suggest for starters his debut album Safe as Milk. It's a bit more 'normal' and contains a few damn cool slide guitar licks by a very young Ry Cooder.

While we're on the topic of strange voices and crazy music, let's not forget the daddy of them all, Frank Zappa. I'm partial to his earliest stuff, like We're Only In It for the Money, but all of it is good, and all of it is nuts. If you can find his "Billy the Mountain", listen to it, and listen again. In my mind it's the funniest piece of music ever written.

i love tom waits too - my ex put me onto him. such a gorgeous and unique voice.
i love the idea of a water birth, but haven't really looked into it. i definitely want to have kids, and would like to go natural, but who knows who i'll deal with it at the moment of the horrible, horrible pain :P
marigold, you're still studying to be a midwife, yes? but you've already seen births and stuff? when you graduate, do you go straight to midwife status or do you have to do an internship or something? what made you go into the field?

Oh my gosh, some fellow Stranglers fans! Fantastic!
'Golden Brown' is my favourite song of all time, but I adore virtually all of their stuff from '77 up to about '86, at which point it all got a bit too AOR for me. They weren't big fans of Australia, though - have you ever listened to the lyrics to 'Nuclear Device'?

Heya doinel,
You're right about "Safe as Milk," it's a much easier album to get into than TMR. Some of the album is hit and miss, but the Captain had me from a minute into the very first song, "Sure 'Nuf 'n' Yes I Do." Man, his voice is amazing!

Yeah Arsby these two are an awsome pairing and it's almost unbelievable what great music came out of California in the 60s and 70s.
Zappa was a genius and the amount of music he released is only topped by Jerry Garcia I think. :)

Hi Marigold!
Nice to meet you, so to speak!
Some interesting discussions on metal going on so I'll add my two cents: I'm a big fan of gothic metal (aka Scandanavian metal) ala Nightwish, Apocalyptica, After Forever, Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil, Amaran, etc. Ever heard of any of them?
As for sci-fi/etc. Well, obviously, if you haven't read the Dune series, you must! One of the most enthralling multi-book series I've ever read and probably my favorite fiction series ever. Of course, while often very weird, Robert Heinlein's future history series is also very good (i.e. the series that starts with Methuselah's Children and ends with, I believe, Number of the Beast.)

hey chloe b, don't you tempt me with tasty clovies! mmm, like smoking an apple pie...however, i have said to myself that if i properly quit, i'm allowed clovies on special occasions, like my birfday. Digitalist, love most of those bands you mention, have been to see nightwish, however, i think i like them better recorded then live (dont get me wrong, they were great, just didnt get my heart pumping as much as i thought they would). just getting into a band called dragonforce, i hear they are coming in may, so i think i will have to be poor again, and spend all my hard earned money on band tickets!! i wish slayer would tour, i heard rumours they would..... also, iron maiden apparently has a site where you can petition them to tour oz...

Hi Marigold!
Really liked your videos. You have steady hands and a wonderful steadying voice, and you handle yourself in a way that can calm down anyone and make anyone feel relaxed and comfortable with you, no matter what you're doing or we're doing with you. Keep up with Uni, hang in there, you'll make a great midwife. If I had a child I would want you to deliver it -- and if you did and I recognized you, I'm confident you would know how to handle things in a way that would make everything totally smooth and perfect.
Thanks for sharing so much about yourself, how you care about you work, how you feel about your body, how you enjoy nature, I'm very happy that you're here. I've been looking for sites where women share about sexuality in a way that engages the whole self, that's respectful and connecting and thoughtful and makes me feel good inside and all over, not just turned on. I think what you're doing is really fabulous and I hope you decide to do more of it. You're a really beautiful geek, and the geek in me (I think there's a bit of a geek in all of us) connects with your geekiness as well as your beauty. Keep up the good work!
I hope we get to see more of you. And thanks for sharing about your music. Thanks for being there, in case, 'cause. All in all the clock is slow, six color pictures all in a row. I think you're way above standard -- 5 stars. I particularly enjoy the circumference. Like a record!

wow, my computer decided to go to funky town again, but hopefully she's feeling a bit better now, so i can post some more! i've also been busy with work and study etc.....wow, paula, thats so cool about your bf!!! has he kept the water bottle? i went on monday night, it was freakin awesome!! i had work at 7 am the next day so i said to myself 'marigold, no going into the mosh pit and throwing yourself around like a psycopathic maniac'.....and what did i do? the moment i opeth launched into their first song i was up the front head banging and getting very squashed!!! had an interesting day at work the next day, im telling you....but it was worth it!!! they are freaking metal gods!!!
thanks everyone for posting, hooray for geekiness eh jimdrubba!!!
so what has everyone been up to?? gabrielle, if you decide to have kids, a water birth is a totally awesome option...but i guess thats the main thing about midwifery- when a woman goes into labour, it's all about what she wants. a natural birth, or an epidural, or whatever, its totally up to her.....and even if things don't go as planned, like there has to be an emergency caesar, it is still a beautiful, cool, totally awesome experiance!!!
have seen a water birth, they are really cool.....the warm water helps with labour pains, and because baby comes out from the uterus into warm water, he/she is usually heaps less shocked, because it is an envirnment similar to the womb. new born babies have a special reflex where they automatically hold their breath under water (cos thats what theyve been doing for nine months previously!) so when they come out, you can just guide them gently to the surface, and float them in the warm water. so cool!!!
valerie, i havnt ever heard of using painkillers during childbirth leading to postpartum depression....sometimes the drugs can make the baby's heartrate go down, or make the woman sick, sleepy or spaced out, but they are very well controlled by very practiced doctors and midwives.....post partum depression is an interesting subject....over 80 percent of women get some form of 'baby blues' (feeling teary and sad for a couple of days) and many women get ppd, only alot of the time they don't report it, cos being the tough, strong women they are, they don't feel as if it is important enough to see the doctor!
using painkillers may make the chance of having a caeser go up, or the baby may suffer breathing probs at birht (though once again, painkillers are well controlled by medical staff, and can be a fantastic thing for women during labour...trust me on this one!!!) and possible, if the baby is taken to a care unit, or the mother feels bad about taking the painkillers, this might lead to a ppd, but really this is a foggy subject.....many, many different factors contribute to ppd, but its important to remember that many women suffer from some 'baby blues', or sadness, and this is a perfectly natural thing, what with all the hormones going nuts, and not to mention the massive change of having a baby in your life!
oh wow, i sound like a lecturer.....scary....
so, what have i been up to? apart from the usual....i have been steadily working my way through the entire series of red dwarf....up to season seven.... actually i have seen the series before, but not in order, so its alot less confusing. bloody hilarious though!! i love kryten and rimmer....been reading a book called 'ghormangast', its really trippy, sort of fucked-up gothic fantasy, its mad. apart from that, been trying to catch as many gigs as possible, need my weekly dose of vitamin metal!!!
always searching for and listening to new bands......and i love seeing local bands play and supporting them. i wish i wish i wish that rage against the machine were still together!!! hot dang i would love to see them in concert.
oh yeah, thats right, i went to the rolling stones!!!! hooray!!! TOTALLLY FUCKIN COOL!!! i lost my shit, acted like one of those screaming groupies on documentaries about the beatles (another band i would love to see, though i guess it'll have to wait til i'm dead, and they give a concert in the underworld, or heaven, or hell, or wherever the fuck i end up....) oh my lordy lord, they were so good!! like they were 25 again!!!! they played a really great set, and all the songs i wanted them too- sympathy for the devil, paint it black, get off my cloud, honky-tonk women, and they finished on you cant always get waht you want!!! bliss........
and now i must go, but i shall be back my friends....

Hey Marigold, you make my day! Finally I found someone who was at the Stones' concert. I am myself a big fan since ages and I'm looking forward to see them here in Europe. It's so crazy that you love these old songs. They are the soundtrack to the life of more than one generation obviously. And the boys are indeed mega cool because they are authentic.

and yes, the clash rule! as do the stranglers, the ramones, anthrax, judas priest, manowar, hammerfall, and so many other bands i would go insane naming them all. i think i would curl up and die without music (although i could do without shite music) you like any metal bands?
Hey, cool! Another metalhead/punk rock girl in here!! :D That's awesome!
Oh, sorry...haven't properly introduced myself...LOL Hi, I'm Kara...just noticed that you have great taste in music and got excited. I love all kinds of music but nothing gets my heart pumping like a good hard rockin' metal or punk song. I got to see Anthrax play a few years ago, that was really great. And I saw Disturbed in concert just last year -- do you like them? REALLY good show...one of the best I've been to. And of course the Ramones are one of my all-time favorites...had the honor of seeing one of their very last shows before they retired.
I wanted to extend an invitation to this music thread that a bunch of us have been hanging out in lately...we've been having lots of fun and we'd love to see you drop by sometime!

so, koesta? love that song! i remember watching a doco on the stones, and they played on, like, the ed sullivan show or something, but it was in the 60's, and they made mick sing 'lets spend some TIME together'...he was so pissed off, hehe...
yeah doinel, you should go see the stones for sure, they were un-bloody-believable! kara, i can't beleive you saw anthrax!! were they amazing? i'd love to see them.

kara, i can't beleive you saw anthrax!! were they amazing? i'd love to see them.
They were SO GOOD! I saw them at a heavy metal benefit just after 9/11 -- and of course there were all sorts of chemical terror scares at that point. So Anthrax comes out in these jumpsuits and they line up...the jumpsuits spelled out "We're not changing our name" -- it was really cool. There were other great bands there too like Sebastian Bach and the reunion of Twisted Sister.
I wanted to see Anthrax again recently since they reteamed with Joey Belladonna, but I had to work. It would have been amazing though...they were playing the same space where I had just seen Disturbed and it's a really good venue.
What are some of your favorite songs or albums that you're listening to currently?

I thought you loved the Stones. You can't have it both ways.
There were many white bands attempting to cover black R&B in the 60s.
Why did the worst of them become the most famous?
Maybe because they were as unmusical as their fans.

heyyyy philos, chill out man......i dig the music of muddy waters, howlin wolf, chuck berry, little richard.....the stones dug them too, they did duos with muddy waters and stuff, covered heaps of their songs, and are constantly saying on docos how much those dudes influenced their music.i agree, its totally screwed up how alot of those guys didnt get as famous as the stones (but at least the stones didnt totally rip off their shit and pass it off as their own, like say, elvis, who many people would say played 'music') but the stones did get famous, and i dig their music.
and i do not retract my statement......i love music!!! the stones play music. keif is a god, and brian jones was a virtuoso.
what about cream? do you think they are classified as 'music'? or led zeps? or the velvet underground?.....those band were highly influenced as well....
i know they (the stones) had some less then good songs (most bands do) but they did have real talent. all bands are influenced by other bands, thats how rock and roll, metal and punk developed, by people copying each other to a certain extent.
again, i totally agree, its fucked up when the racism of those times (and even nowadays) prevented some guys from getting famous, and let other guys cash in on their work. its crap. BUT, the stones are not crap.
i guess if you dont like their music, you dont like their music, fair enough. however i wouldnt go as far as saying stones fans are 'unmusical' :(. that comment made marigold very sad indeed!!!
(dont worry philos, i aint picking on you, just defending my love of music :):))

Sticky Fingers is one of the greatest albums of all time, any genre. And while it's a shame that not ever musician gets their due, I would have been okay with it had the Stones killed one artist per song they wrote during the latter 60's. Granted, the best song on the album (Dead Flowers) was "stolen," but not from a black musician, but from one of the whitest hillbillies ever to write a song: Townez Van Zant.
(Note to Towens fans: Jvak loves him dearly, and has to choke back tears every time he hears "Tecumseh Valley," but the man was a hillbilly. :D )

20th May 2006, 10:49 PM
The story I heard about Dead Flowers is, that it's partly written/inspired by Gram Parsons, a close drinking buddy of Keith at that time. The reference to Townes van Zandt is new (but interesting) to me. He covered the song himself later on. The best songs on Sticky Fingers are for me Sister Morphine (with the spectacular Ry Cooder) and Sway (highly underrated).

Hey Marigold,
It's a little late, but I just finished a book a week ago that you might enjoy. It's called "Fargo Rock City," and it's by a very clever American journalist, Chuck Klosterman. It's half music critique, half memoir about growing up in the 80's obsessed with metal bands. It's very funny, entertaining, and at times insightful. It even gave me something akin to respect for even the glamiest of 80's glam, which I wouldn't have thought possible. I enjoyed it a great deal, and I'd guess it would be even more appealing to a metal fan, even if most of the bands discussed are pretty old.

So, here I am browsing the board when I stumble on the fact that two of the most adorable models on the site are into Philip K. Dick (Gabrielle being the other). Well, at the risk of outing my real world ID, having just gotten back from the World Science Fiction Convention where I was on the PKD panel discussion (for about the 5th time), that gets my interest . . . I mean, every guy fantasizes about a girl who's really into Dick, no?
And I see that folks are recommending classic sf authors like Asimov, Bradbury, Clarke, Heinlein, and Herbert -- all excellent stuff in its day but not Phil Dickian in the least!
So, lessee . . . you might try Only Begotten Daughter by James Morrow; and Gun, with Occasional Music by Jonathan Lethem (who recently won a MacArthur "genius" grant), both of which are wonderfully satiric. Jonathan is a huge PKD fan.
A lot of people who are hugely into PKD also adore Gene Wolfe, but I think the main reason is not because there's any deep similarity between them, but because a lot of folks simply feel that they're the two best writers of sf and fantasy ever (Neil Gaiman is just one of many younger sf writers who revere Wolfe). The best Wolfe is in a quartet of related mammoth novels (7 total volumes in trade paperback): The Book of the New Sun and its sequel The Urth of the New Sun, and The Book of the Long Sun and its sequel The Book of the Short Sun. People read these over and over and get more and more out of them . . . they are inexhaustably great.

...you might try... Gun, with Occasional Music by Jonathan Lethem (who recently won a MacArthur "genius" grant)... Jonathan is a huge PKD fan.
Anything by Lethem is a worthwhile read. Have you read Girl in Landscape, which is a bizarre SF treatment of High Noon?
Motherless Brooklyn (mystery, not SF) is probably the edgiest book I've ever read. The narrator and protagonist has a bad case of Tourette's Syndrome.
The one I didn't get was The Shape We're In (SF, sorta).
