    Questions for Abby

First off, let me make it absolutely clear: in my opinion Abbywinters is the best site on the internet for female erotica.

However, nothing is ever perfect and when I see areas where there appears to be room for improvement I welcome the chance to offer ideas via this forum. One such area concerns variety throughout the shoots where, again in my opinion, there is not enough on offer.

In general it seems that nearly all sites have a certain defined presentation and approach to their shoots which they constantly maintain throughout. It is I suppose a "production line" philosophy that is partly due to the pressures of having to add something new to the site on a regular basis. In the end what is offered has that "sameness" about each scene that eventually becomes repetitious and loses the freshness and excitement it was originally designed to produce. AW, for all it offers that is not found elsewhere and which in fact makes it almost unique, is no different in this respect as there is this certain "sameness" about the shoots.
What I wrote there was not meant to needlessly criticise, neither is this post or others I have made, but a genuine attempt to offer what I believe is a way to make the site just a little better.

Within different threads I've raised the following questions. These are the same questions asked by other members and models over a long period of time but which have yet to receive a direct answer. It isn't a question of wanting a positive response. If the answer is in the negative it would of course be disappointing, if in the positive then it would be satisfying to have helped in a little way to bring improvement. Ultimately it's just about getting an answer and maybe a very brief idea as to the reason behind it. So, still maintaining the Abbywinters philosophy.....

Can variety be introduced by using different pre-shoot formats, i.e.: chat between models, chat between staff and model(s) and also backstage format?

Can variety be introduced into shoots by way of different dress and environment, i.e.: models not always in light, casual dress and shoots not always in the home or woodland?

Can variety be introduced by multi-model shoots and are these ever likely to be offered on the site?

Answers would be most welcome and also comments and opinions from members and models.

The pre-shoot thing is already being handled by Masie, adding an actual backstage (before) vid can and has been done. Perhaps not as often as you'd like though Last one I recall off-hand was one of Masie's shoots (about being able to get a tan on a UK beach).

About 'dress' , what do you want to see if it's not casual/light ? Dark generally doesn't look that good I think. Not-casual dress would be either sexy clothes or business/thematic which doesn't fit the overall site theme. Can be done for a special shoot I suppose (years ago, solo shoot by Calibre, definitely fits the not-casual clothing ;-). The clothing chosen for shoots does fit the way AW shoots are expected to look for me personally. A different shoot once a year or so would be fine, but I do like girls in light casual dress actually

Environment, again what DO you want to see? Keeping in mind that AW is in the Netherlands so outside shoots will always have a woodland or at most sand-dune/beach background, where the latter is hard to get to shoot. Indoor not in a home would be... what? A factory/office?

I wouldn't mind multi-model shoots, although I'm always worried one model won't fit in the overal shoot/action and I'll feel sorry for her. But that's just me I wouldn't want huge group tier3/hardcore shoots, I prefer to be able to keep an overview and see things. If you pile up say 6 models it will be very hard to see anything, unless they're all apart but then you might as well shoot it that way.
(late Jim Holliday used to direct such huge scenes, wasting 20+ ladies in the process). The only true bonus of a multi-model shoot for me would be that I get the impression the girls involved all want to do one (hi Noa! ;-).

Btw. I'm assuming you mean tier3/hardcore for your multi-model question, as tier1/fun shoots have been done and likely will be done in future although not very often (my guess).

Hi Frans, and thanks for answering.

There have been many ideas, comments, suggestions and opinions posted on the forum over the years concerning these questions but to date I can find no official response. This leaves members in the dark and, for me at least, frustrated. So that is the reason I thought I would ask the questions directly.

Just to briefly reply to your questions:

Pre-shoots. Masie (bless her) has been listening and working hard to adapt the current format but the question still remains: why is the format fixed and why can't it be rotated? The backstage format you referred to is around three years old so I think it would be nice to see this type of shoot a lot more often!

Dress. This would have to suit the environment. But as an example Christiana once appeared in her business suit in an after-work solo; made such a pleasant change from tee-shirts and shorts. Just occasionally a little lingerie would be nice too - I understand that girls naturally wear this.

      Environment.

Outdoor: Swimming pool and beachside allow for swimwear - surely this is not incredibly difficult for the Netherlands. Maybe a barge/boat trip on canal or river? Misha and Yale once shot selfies harbourside. Granted that other more dramatic locations would be a lot more difficult but a once-a-year trip, maybe south to visit with the Spanish models, maybe do a little recruitng at the same time?
Indoor: A post-swim shower in the changing rooms? Same thing for-post tennis match or other sports. After-party nighttime twosome? Sauna? Spa? A small office setting? Abby should have an office so maybe shoot it there. Factory - why not? With all of these incorporate dress to suit.
Earlier, darker shoots (eg: Giselle/Anneke or Angie/Shaminee) also provided a nice change.

      T3 Multi-model.
I too am not a fan of large groups for the same reasons you gave: three or four max. Yep, Noa comes to mind (a very lovely thought indeed!) and there are other models eager to be involved. Mirai, on her thread, provided a great idea for a threesome which, intriguingly, allowed for the models to briefly wear make-up at the start of the shoot. Now THAT would be interesting!

I know AW has this "wholesome" (ugh! terrible word that!) and "natural" philosophy but I believe that a great deal of what has been suggested over the years can readily be accommodated into this philosophy. Basically all these ideas are designed to add a little variety, some new freshness that I truly believe will only improve the site overall. However, in the end what I have posted here are only just some more ideas and suggestions. Without any response that is all they will continue to be.

Boomertoo I promise (hand on heart promise here) we will answer all of this properly. Right now we have a crazy few weeks coming up in house so please don't loose heart if you do not hear from anyone about this right away, its not that we don't care or value your input, we certainly do but these things need to be answered properly so give us a bit of time

Masie, thank you. As always your reply is efficient and charming. What would we do without you!

I am frustrated and this is the only avenue for me to address this concern because I have been ignored by the support team. I have been a member for many years and whenever there was a technical issue it was handled quickly. Here is my problem. If there are any images in the discussion boards, (a shoot preview or if a model posts a picture) It is blurred out and the message is that says "this image is restricted to abbywinters.com members. If I can post here I clearly am a member.
Masie please forward this to the relevant folks

Ermm.. you've not been ignored actually I know 'cos I've discussed this with the support-team. Since this has nothing to do with this thread I will move it to a new thread. I will reply there as well and ask support-team to contact you again.

                Has Abby Changed?

On another thread "Questions for Abby" I posed some questions relating to variety on the site. The lovely Masie has been kind enough to reply and I am quite content to wait until there is time to consider answers. What I have written here is the reasoning that lay behind asking those questions in the first place. It began with a simple observation:

Has Abbywinters changed since moving to Europe? I think yes, that subtly but steadily there has been a shift from those earlier days. But what is that change and has it been for the better? The answer to that has to lie within the personal opinion of each member.

My personal opinion is that the change has occurred in two areas, one being the move towards a more professional and comprehensive site and the other is in the trend towards "wholesomeness" or indeed a changing interpretation of what constitutes "natural". With the latter it is seen that models no longer display extensive tattooing (as seen on Zora), nor piercings, nor do they appear with brightly dyed multi-coloured hair. Where these were once accepted as being part of what is naturally feminine this now seems no longer to be the case.

Looking back to 2002 shows Susie trussed, gagged and taped for Petra's benefit: a world away from the scenes shot today. This shoot would certainly not fit in well with the current philosophy nor, I hasten to add, am I advocating for more like it. It does though provide a startling example of Abby then and now. Over the following eight years or so there were many shoots that displayed a willingness to experiment in different ways, albeit more mildly than that example, yet since then this willingness seems to have slowly evaporated.

Along with the basically standard girl to girl and masturbation scenes were those that tinkered with the lighting (Katya/Liandra), the locations (Christiana/Marigold), the scenario (Larissa/Keilyn) or indeed the "action" (T2 Martina/Susan). These are just a couple of examples. Sprinkled along the way were over forty shoots involving multiple models, virtually all in the "fun" category but yet showing a preparedness at that time to gather models together, sometimes up to near twenty or so, for a shoot that was out of the ordinary. This can be compared to the past four or five years where only one similar shoot has been done.

Perhaps in the final analysis it is both this shift in attitude and the strive for professionalism in all aspects of the site that has helped to create a situation where similar looking shoots are produced on an ongoing basis: what I loosely term the "production line" philosophy. It is possibly in this search for quality, for improvement, which no one could deny has been achieved technically, that something has been lost from the earlier days and that, in my opinion, is the opportunity to think outside the square and thus to take a chance on trying something just a little different. I think too that with the move towards "wholesomeness" and the more conservative opinion of what is "natural" there is now a tendency to overlook some aspects of what constitutes the real natural woman of today.

As I said, whether there has been this change and whether it is considered for better or worse is an individual opinion. I believe there has been this change, that the site is technically far superior both in quality and in the menu it offers to members, but that also it has lost that little "spark" that was there in those earlier times.

It would be interesting to hear opinions from other members.

Abbywinters has changed a lot but, sadly, almost everything is less good than before:
                    + Addition of Girl-Boy shoots
+ Addition of playdate (but if I would prefer the models to do more real shoots instead of playdates)
                    - Models have to hide their tattoos and piercing but are allowed to wear makeup (mascara, lipstick)
                    - Shoots focused on sexiness instead of fun and activities
                    - No more Girl-Girl group shoots
                    - Number of shoots released per week divided per 2
                    - No more backstage videos
                    - Seeing beautiful locations is very rare now
                    - Tags not working correctly

But AW still has great models and very good technical skills.
It would just need to take a few good decisions to be closer to what made AW great.

                      Redlabka, totally agree!
Masie has said that there will be a reply to my "Questions for Abby" thread once the busy period has passed so I'm hoping that means some of the points you've raised, along with other ideas and suggestions made in the past, are about to be discussed. It would be nice to see some of the better things about the old Abby back again!

I dont know, but i guess that the members want more fun, and less masturbation. If I was the head of the business, I would find out members opinion. But: AW is still a good site! I love the fun shoots and I want more of them! :-)

By the way. Where is all the tatoos??

I wouldn't. Porn is personal, and what people say they want probably differs from what they buy. I'd monitor the download stats of different types of shoots posted on the site. Then I'd create more of the popular ones. I'd also look at industry trends and see what might work.

Thanks for your feedback. I'm Garion, the Owner of abbywinters.com.

Before I ran a company, I was similarly frustrated with inscrutable management types at companies I was a fundamental fan of, who'd not respond to questions I felt were obvious and easy to answer. But then I started running this company (and a few others), and I came to realise that many questions that seem simple, are actually very complicated.

Part of my reluctance to answer questions is that I know people will not be satisfied with my answers - "Oh, why don't you just...", "Maybe you should try..." - I think our American friends call this "armchair quarterbacking" (a quaint phrase that describes how fat men sit on barca lounges and yell at the TV how pro football players should do things differently).

The fact is, few people have any idea what's involved in producing an erotic website (or, indeed, running a business). Sometimes I think people are just trolling, trying to start an argument, like in that Monty Python sketch.

Some facts that affect all decisions I make:
                            - I make my email address available on every page of the website for people to contact me.
                            - We have around 15,000 paying customers
                            - Pay-per-scene purchasing is slowly eclipsing subscription-based memberships
                            - We do market research, formal and informal; it's baked in to many processes
                            - We are obsessed with statistics and trends
                            - Apart from things like broken pages / links, virtually nothing you see on the site is an "accident": It's likely that way for a reason
                            - abbywinters.com BV is a business, that has a fiduciary responsibility (ie, make money for its shareholders)
                            - As the Owner, I have personal hopes, dreams and aspirations that I seek to implement via the business
                            - These hopes dreams and aspirations evolve over time (though they have not changed much in the last 5 years, they have changed a LOT since 2005).
                            - Sales in the whole adult industry are terrible. We're seeing around 40% of the sales we used to see 5 years ago (ie, a 60% drop). Tube sites are the main reason (eg, youporn.com) - why pay for it when it's so easy to get "similar" stuff that gets the job done for free, right?
                            - Young women's propensity to model nude online has hugely reduced over the last 10 years.. Finding models now is harder than it has ever been. We make more compromises on model suitability than we ever have before.
                            - Young women in Europe are extremely different than those of a similar age, education and income level in Australia; different in their wants and needs, in their expectations, in their approach, their attitude
                            - With the decrease in sales, we see less updates, less staff, staff paid less, less models, models paid less, less shoots, simpler shoots, lower-quality shoots, less variety, less complexity
                            - It's an impossible balance to make a site that pleases staff, models, customers, and guests (for example, a tour video that would drive sales, would likely alienate some prospective models; what satisfies staff, may not satisfy paying customers)
                            - After personally training about 30 individuals in shooting for the site over the past 12 years, my head hurts. Hence, some of the standardizations seen. Invariably, this reduces variety (but, maintains quality at a certain level, and ensures longevity of the site).
                            - Europe has many more smaller cities, Australia has fewer, larger cities. Getting 20 - or even 8! - suitable models in one place at the one time wanting the same thing is almost impossible.
                            - Customers (well, all of us!) tend to look at the past with rose coloured glasses, a well-known phenomenon.
                            - I know that customer feedback is always offered in a heartfelt, honest way, and they generally seek to see the site succeed, but also that customers seek to please an audience of one (themselves) - of course, this is understandable, and when I email Google, I never expect a response.
                            - I used to view Training as an annoying task I worked to avoid and do as little as possible. Now I realize, there's probably nothing more important than training. I am working now to train the next 100 people, not the next three people.
                            - Even though the content is my passion, in many weeks less than 33% of my time is spent doing anything to do with content. Instead, business priorities like payroll, tax and accounting, insurances, data storage, filing, equipment repair, performance reviews, legals, recruitment, training...
                            - Ex-staff have lied (to me, models, other staff), stolen (recently, €47,000!), cheated, made public releases of company data, collaborated together, engaged police, sued, misrepresented, and behaved in ways that amaze me
                            - Our current staff are awesome!
                            - Feedback from customers is overwhelmingly negative on tattoos on models - any tattoos, any where, any size (but especially piecemeal tattoos). Of course, there are a vocal minority who love tattoos. Occasionally, a models work transcends her tattoos.
                            - Over time, we have found a "formula" that satisfies the company's mission and vision, engages staff and models, satisfies my personal goals, and makes the greatest number of customers happy. Over time, I see this formula become more "bedded down". Sometimes I worry we're too restrictive, other times I look at competitors and think "gee, we're really doing ok".
                            - I am proud of what we have created
                            - I get very sad and frustrated when I see posts like the "Has Abby Changed?" one

Thanks for that lengthy and informative reply, Garion.

What Boomertoo has been saying, as I understand it, is that much about this site has changed, and changed for the worse. And I think that what you are saying, basically, is that yes, that's right, but that is due to a number of factors that have effectively forced you to make the changes. That is a perfectly legitimate response, although disappointing.

To me, the most significant changes are the reduction in the number of models and updates, and the way in which new models are introduced to the site.

Re the number of models and updates, as late as 2009 and 2010, before the move to Amsterdam, there were three new models every week, plus several reduxes; now it's one new model and one redux a week.

Re the introduction of models to the site, what used to happen was that the new model would come in and do one set of stills and one video, and then she would go home again and not do another shoot for months, at which stage she might do an IM or a redux or whatever she wanted to do. Now the default position appears to be that the model comes into the studio with an offer to do a solo, a redux, a couple of IMs, a DIM, GGs and in some cases a BG. She can pull out at any stage, but mostly they don't. So when the solo, the redux, the IMs and so on appear, they were in fact all shot over a period of a week or so in most cases (not every case), whereas in the past they were shot individually, at least the first few. That shouldn't necessarily make much of a difference but in fact it does contribute to the different feel of the site.

The changed policy regarding tattoos (from acceptable to unacceptable) is really a by-product of there being fewer models. Most members don't like tattoos. I don't like tattoos. But in the past a model with tattoos now and then didn't matter because there were plenty of others. It's different when there's only one new model a week; if she is covered in tattoos, then some members will be unhappy.

But to say it's a question of tattoos or no tattoos is not correct, because you do in fact shoot lots of models with tattoos. So the real question for the site is, knowing that the model has tattoos, do we show them, or do we avoid showing them by covering them up (such as Thais who wears long socks in every single shoot because she has a big tattoo on her leg) or simply not shooting part of a model's body (eg her back if she has a big dragon or fairy wings there)? For me and I think a lot of members, the answer to that one is that I would prefer to see the whole model with tattoos, rather than only seeing selected tattoo-free highlights of the model.

My other beef with the site, not mentioned by other members in this thread, is the totally vapid and shallow nature of the questions the model is asked in her solos. Most of the time the model is not even asked what country she's from, let alone what she does in her life or hopes to do in the future; and any question about whether she's modelled before or why she's chosen to do it is absolutely verboten. The avoidance of those questions (which used to be asked frequently) is not explained by the factors you mentioned.

Susie is my "ideal" AW classic.....she started with very little ink and it increased over time....It was a non issue for me.....newer models like Yara have some interesting ink that I find intriguing and not a negative....In general a model with tats and hairy is better than no ink and no hair....weird huh? we all have our issues!

As a model, and a partner of who has viewed the site as an anxious teenager through until the time he got his first credit card and beyond, which in hindsight was probably around the time Abby was unfortunately left to pack and move overseas and why I am a model here.. all I can say is thank you. Thank you, Garion, for providing me with this opportunity and such an amazing place to express who I am, as well as the many other Abby models. This website, this community is truly something special, dare I say you wouldn't visit many, if any, erotica websites to receive the same sense of community I felt when I first posted to the community boards. Everybody changes, aren't websites allowed to as well? I am forever grateful too Abby for allowing me my opportunity, they are of the highest standard.

Garion, I look forward to meeting you in my travels later in the year, apologies in advance if i 'fan girl' a little

Thanks Garion for your extremely informative post. I couldn't imagine any other adult site on the web where the owner would even consider being so upfront with his customers, nor do I believe would the same have been possible a few years ago on this site.

I've been around for almost ten years now and have seen the site evolve. Obviously the move to Europe, born out of bare necessity, didn't make life easier and for some time AW had more semi-pros on the site than usually (although even then, there were amazing newcomers such as the wonderful Kylie H.). However, contrary to other forum members I feel that more recently AW has regained much of the girl-next-door feel it originally had, thanks to some incredible models like Yara, Flora, Gisela, or Zara - to randomly name just a few. Any inclination I may have had of leaving the site has certainly vanished into thin air (and yes, I know I could download the stuff for free on a tube site, but it just doesn't feel right).

After all these years and surfing hundreds of porn sites I still believe AW is only site that combine quality, honesty, respect for models and the GND feel (IFM being a close contender). My heartfelt thanks go out to everyone here who is working to make this happen.

There are some great new models on the website (ie: Laura N, Willa...).

Tube sites are the main reason (eg, youporn.com) - why pay for it when it's so easy to get "similar" stuff that gets the job done for free, right?
When the tube sites arrived, AW doubled the price of the subscriptions and divided by 2 the number of updates. It may have played an important role in the drop of memberships. In regular industry, Netflix succeed despite piracy because it has a great value for money.

I don't understand why adding more fun to the shoots would cost more to produce. For example, the shoots by Elvaar are great. Do they cost more to produce? Couldn't the same type of shoots be done in Europe?

Even with 4-5 models, it's possible to make some fun group shoots. I would love to see some shoots like "Wrestling Girls", "Kitchen Girls", "Laundromat Girls", "Shower Girls"...

Maybe a lot of people don't like tattoos but hiding them is the worst solution possible. It's as dumb as putting a "bip" over the "fuck" world on TV: Everybody knows that it's here but there are less complaints because it is supposedly "hidden". Trying to make the girls look more amateur by hiding their tattoos make me feel that one takes me for a fool.

While I'd love to see another girl-girl fun/group shoot I wonder how many other members would want to (esp. if it would replace a g/g shoot that week). A small group might indeed work better, getting another 30-girls Steps shoot setup would be a planning nightmare

I think it's logical that any company (or site) settles something of a standard because they know what most of their customers want. A company will cater to it's customers, sometimes go of the beaten path to see if people like that. If not, they'll not do it again, otherwise it might become a fixture on site (IM's are the best example of this). It might help I like knee-high socks esp. in pretty colors ;-)

redlabka, what is it you specifically like about Elvaar's shoots? A lot of those are shot outdoors, which is nice. It's not really outdoorsy weather in the Netherlands right now, wait a couple of months

I get very sad and frustrated when I see posts like the "Has Abby Changed?" one.
                                                Garion

I am dismayed that you have been upset by the thread I started. It was never intended as criticism of Abbywinters and I honestly thought that I had written it in such a way as to avoid creating any impression of being critical.

I consciously try to frame all my posts in this way simply because, as I have often said, that AW is a great site and that being critical just for the sake of it helps no one. I don't see myself as an "armchair quarterback", although others may, rather just someone trying to offer what I honestly believe are comments and ideas that might improve the site in a small way. I raised certain questions because these had been asked many times before by members and models but remained unacknowledged. I appreciate the reasoning behind your reluctance to respond but I still believe that a negative response is preferable to none at all. It does at least offer assurance that the many questions/comments are not going unnoticed.

It was always my understanding that there are many problems associated with running an erotic website, of course without actually being aware of the intricacies of those problems, and your reply has clearly explained what occurs behind the scenes that we members are unaware of. I sincerely thank you for that.

If I may reply to a couple of specifics:

                                                - I have never advocated for huge multi-model shoots. As nice as they would be, and as popular with other members, I do realise the major organisational difficulties attached to these. However I still believe that much smaller shoots involving three or four models would add definite attraction to the site and, with respect, remain unconvinced that this is just too difficult to arrange.
                                                - Yes, the suggestions I make are partly based on what I personally would like to see on the site but I also try to ask for members opinions which would perhaps indicate if I were out of step with others and also possibly offer feedback to AW on the subject raised.
                                                - I do understand, and sympathise, with the extra "unseen" hassles of running a business as I ran my own company until recently, although admittedly on a smaller scale.
                                                - Yes, your staff are awesome! The technical assistance I received has been terrific and the cheery and helpful feedback from a certain young woman has been wonderful.
                                                - I remain totally neutral about tattoos. Other members are not and I respect their opinion. However there have been so many posts about this subject that a simple statement of policy would help clear up what seems to be ongoing confusion among members.

Ultimately the comments and suggestions I've posted have always been offered with the hope that they would perhaps help to make the site just a little better and always with the best of intentions. If most or all of these are too difficult to incorporate or indeed impossible then that is how is has to be. In the meantime I accept that I have been politely slapped on the wrist so have decided that, rather than cause more concern, it is better if I now retire to the ranks of the "silent majority".

I am proud of what we have created
Garion, I truly believe that you have every reason to be.

What Boomertoo has been saying, as I understand it, is that much about this site has changed, and changed for the worse.
                                                  Hi Jackson

I'd decided not to post on the forum again rather than risk appearing negative and so causing upset but had to respond just this once because your answer shows how easy it is to misunderstand if I don't get the phrasing right. My fault entirely, not yours.

What I basically was trying to say is that the site has changed some since its inception, that a great deal of it has improved while some, mostly in the variety of shoots, does not offer as much as it once did. I tried to explain this by ending thus:

....that the site is technically far superior both in quality and in the menu it offers to members, but that also it has lost that little "spark" that was there in those earlier times.
This is solely my opinion and led me to start the thread "Questions for Abby" where I offered a few ideas to introduce variation in shoots. In his reply Garion has explained why shoots are now more "standardised" than before and, while understanding, I still hope that circumstances will allow for some change in the future.

Any other perceived criticism in my posts is misplaced and is entirely due to my poor choice of words. For this I apologise.
