    This painting is titled 'Pornography'

Take a good look at it. What do you think?

I recently attended an artist talk on sex, censorship & art. The artist of this painting is Elizabeth Buset, a very talented painter specializing in what she calls high realism. Many of her paintings are nearly indistinguishable from photographs, and the artist statement behind each of them is compelling. She mostly paints objects (I could stare at her crystal forms for hours) but a few of her overtly sexual paintings have been censored at exhibitions.

This doughnut was the picture on the poster for the talk and I was SO intrigued to find out what a doughnut had to do with porn that I skipped my evening classes just to attend the talk. There was a Q&A period at the end and no one had asked the significance of the meaning behind the doughnut-as-porn and it was burning inside me. So I finally asked her, and her explanation was very interesting! It immediately reminded me of the key difference in Abby Winters' more holistic approach to pornography as compared to mainstream pornography. I remember someone making a similar point in another thread a while back as well.

So the artist said the doughnut represents an orifice as viewed from the typical camera angle in porn where the woman is simply reduced to a penetrable hole. The pink icing looks kind of like the folds of the labia and the shiny sprinkles represent the sort of shiny, fake everything we typically see in pornography. Also, if you look closely, the hole of the doughnut has been penetrated, as evidenced by the bits of dough and messed up icing. My immediate thought once she explained it, well, after thinking "How clever!" was that I can think of one kind of porn site that, thankfully, does not fit this doughnut's representation of the objectified orifice.

    Just some food for thought
