Looks to me current masturbation shoots are setup to always show the models' entire body, where older shoots sometimes take a partial shot. It's probably also heavily influenced by where the camera CAN be placed, in such a way that the model(s) *stay* in shot. That's also the problem with zooming in to precisly capture the model in the shot and nothing else. There are no shooters/staff in the room for such shoots, so if the girl moves a bit in that setup you got trouble.

I don't think its a matter of anatomical close ups, there are still plenty of solo/gg shoots that do that. I don't think anyone suggested close-ups (to the poster who raised it). In a sense, it's all about simple proximity from the viewers perspective. If you seem to be viewing from across a room (or even further since that's just the screen coverage), it can rob scenes of their intimate nature because you're at significantly more of a distance. There are more distractions, facial expressions are harder to see, fiddling with zoom leads to pixelation, etc.

Cutting off legs (not literally!) from time to time, would really benefit some scenes. They do make up a lot of the body's vertical length, but are far less of an issue if the models are horizontal to the camera.
