Awww.. it's not THAT bad Cleo, really. Sort of talking about increasing the video-quality (tech) and if people would want the related HUGE downloads (think, GGT3 shoot almost filling 70% of a dvd ;-).

yeah, it does take me a long time to download GG videos...

    Hi Izi

I have been keeping up with the 4k cinema cameras at red.com... a videographer told me that they will be available for the same prices as existing HDV cameras.

I think that the 4k format will be a Cinema format possibly a replacement for 35mm film! I think Red cameras are being pitched toward filmmakers. After all, more and more films are being shot on both 35mm and digital. I know the first of the new Star Wars films was shot in HD as opossed to film. If you remember...HD (or one of the HD formats) was originally invented by NHK as a film to digital format!

I am slow to adopt new technology as I mentioned before. So I will not be buying a Blue-Ray player until the prices of existing HDTVs go down. TV networks are slow to update equipment because it costs millions to do so! I worked at a production house where they had $15,000 USD studio cameras. When you add the tape decks, controlers/switchers, servers, patch boards, sound equipment into all of that, you can easily see why they are slow to change. (ok, some interfaces can stay, but a lot will need upgrading)

One other comment... I am not sure if people even want hi-res as much as they want hi-quality... Sites like Youporn and xHammster have low quality videos that people love to watch. I see that there is a lot of homemade stuff there too. You know "Amateur" is not just a title for the star in front of the lens, it also involves the quality of the image.

I personally prefer seeing a really high quality picture in low resolution than a crappy image in hi-resolution. Compare video from a mini DV standard def handycam and that from an early 90's era field production beta-cam video camera(the ones they use for news coverage). The cheap mini DV camcorder doesn't quite have the color and image quality of the field production camera... It all comes down to CCD quality.

Back to pictures. I still love stills. I doubt that we will replace stills with video... even if that means replacing the paper with LCD or plasma displays.

Izimbu, you should submit that post to Popular Mechanics or American Cinematographer lol!

Don't worry Cleo, you look pretty no matter what resolution we see you in.

I'm wondering if HDV won't be adopted more quickly by those same amateurs videographers that you mention.

All of those video upload networks, I even know some guys trying to make one, can offer HDV content (720p resolution).

And ironically Star Wars is the poster child for all digital movie making, but many people didn't like it. I know it won't influence serious directors but the costs of upgrading versus the reticence to spend the money to upgrade will keep many directors using celluloid film for a while yet.

I'm just glad that along with garage documentary videographers many adult websites and networks are making the switch faster than film production houses. The film guys just don't need it. And adult websites that want to be taken seriously can't survive on cellphone captured footage alone, they know it.

It makes you wonder then if the film guys aren't going to take it like a bucket of ice water in the face that the porn guys are again, and as usual, on the forefront of technological advancement. The film guys are too entrenched in celluloid film that they can't seriously consider going all digital for a while. Nobody wants to relieve them of their current equipment. At least the newer houses, who couldn't afford to buy equipment in the first place, have the option of going digital by renting the equipment. Once 4K starts making sense I would think they would invest in it heavily. But that doesn't guarantee that theaters the world over, or even in developed areas will adopt 4K projectors. Like every other segment of the market cinema owners have felt the pinch and are as leery as anyone to make the switch to projecters. Where they should have been the first given that film grain and all that bullshit is a good reason to wait the extra quarter or two and just buy the bluray.

Did I say that? yep. Bluray for the moment IS a viable alternative to watching films in theaters.

Two examples are Ironman and Superbads. Though Ironman is very heavy with the filmgrain it is a movie you'll watch over and over, defeating film hands down. While Superbads is an example of a perfectly authored hyper-crisp bluray.

I would never have seen such a movie in theaters but it was stunning to watch it at home. Yeah it sucked as but it was beautiful throughout.

I'm just waiting now for Wall-E, Wanted, DeathRace and Traitor, the last two I missed viewing in theaters and don't much mind because the at home experience is better and guaranteed to be digital.

Which is I suppose an argument in favor of the argument that consumers will buy into 4K to expand that at home experience before theaters will, bringing the movie going experience up to full par.

Are we willing to pay the couple dozen grand for the projectors? a hundred dollars for optical media? or direct access to a movie distributors server?

We'll see. I do think that people are too stuck in their ways about going to a theater to watch movies, and should consider the at home alternative at their fingertips.

Could we get somewhat back on topic, i.e. "stills vs videos" ? Feel free to create Blue-Ray or whatever hidef thread in the Mundance Chatter section though!

    Thanks.

That was a nice conversation Zimbu. If I had a hard drive with all of the AW videos (in 4k res) and stills as well as a 4k capable projector, I could die a happy man

Then you'll miss the joy of Solos entirely.

Or they'd need their own dedicated drive :P

    I know what Abby means!

I would consider myself an artist, studying the subjects on a day to day basis, and because I'm always behind the stills camera, I prefer to be in front of it too! I think it's easier that way.. especially when you know what it's like to be behind it and what makes for good photos. But I can't be sure.. mine haven't come up yet!!
Main reason I like stills.. I feel like I can move freely. Mind over matter maybe?

I like stills. I get a bit awkward/shy in video, and in stills it's better posibile to be perfectionist. I like to take time to do a lot of stills and look awesome

I love the Videos. Just for the stills i would'nt subcribe. And the GG Shoots with the "Before" and "After" Videos are awsome. I'm watching all three videos in the full length. And the first solo Video is the basic to learn more about the lovely Models

Hi Sharani - great to hear you enjoy the before and after videos as well as the main video in Girl Girl shoots, I also find it nice to get to know the models a little before seeing them in action.

You can comment on a shoot using the 'discuss this shoot' button on the shoot page, that will get you to the shoot's thread in either the 'videos' (IM) or 'models' (all other shoots) forum.

For example, the thread for you latest released solo shoot (2016) would be here: https://forums.abbywinters.com/vbull...ad.php?t=18700
