Tips and tricks using AW....

I log onto the boards first thing so that I don't get messed up by profiles altering my last visit timestamp.

After that I want to go to the main site. Is there a link somewhere easy on the boards to take you to the main site? I couldn't find one, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

If there isn't, could you add one to the "Quick Links" drop down?

Thanks,

SpudBig

Under "messageboards", click "home/member's home"

There's the main site menu near the top of the page (Home, Content, Membership, Lists, Extras). The menu command Home, News will take you to the main news page. Was that the page you wanted to visit?

Hey, Spudnik!

You mean when you're on "no images" mode and you don't have the regular menu up above, right?

I have the same problem, though I'd rather have a quick way to get to the site map, which in turn gets me to the FAQ, to any particular model, to the galleries, etc.

If I need to get to the main menu I just change the drop-down to "default style", use the menu, then change back to "no images" when I'm done.

Thanks for trying to help. I think maybe I don't see what you see when I am in the forums.

I don't see the menus/words you are talking about. MS, News is the page I am looking for.

Hi Spuddy

It looks in your screenshot like you've clipped the top of the page? There should be a banner at the top with "messageboards" on the left, and "abbywinters.com" on the right in green. Between them are the standard menus, first one being HOME. From there you can click either "members' home" or "news" to get to the log-in page. ('front page' links to the Tour.)

If you have any anti-adware stuff running, it could be blocking the banner.

Spud, what brand and version of browser is that? It looks like Opera. Have you tried another browser?

Spud, try setting the forum style selector at the far bottom left of any forums page to Default style, rather than no images. The latter supresses the page headers, to hide the name of the site (if someone wants privacy while using the forums when possible onlookers are nearby).

Now I see what you meant by "no images". That is also an Opera setting that I have used in public places to do downloads without getting anyone upset. I wasn't thinking of the forum option because there were images on the screen (avatars and smilies).

I got it now and see what I was wanting. I thought there used to be a way, but after being gone for a while I thought maybe something changed at AW. Turns out to be that something changed on my machine.

Thanks all.

How To Search Lists

If you've taken a look at the lists feature, you know that there are a lot of lists. The site doesn't have a search feature for lists, but you can sift through them quite effectively by using Google and some little-known search tricks.

Google has commands that will let you restrict your results to pages with certain terms in the URL (address), page title, and text. You can also restrict the search to just the abbywinters.com domain, which is essential to making this work. Click the examples below to perform these sample searches, or paste them into the Google search box.

Since all of the list pages have the phrase "list display" in their URL, we'll use that to get a list of all the list pages, like this:

site:abbywinters.com inurl:"list display"

Over 16,000 pages; that's quite a pile (and many pages will be duplicates of others). What if you were looking for lists featuring a certain model? Her name would appear within the text of the list pages, so let's pick a model and find all the lists she's on:

site:abbywinters.com inurl:"list display" intext:susie

Much shorter. Finally, let's imagine you're looking for images of Susie standing. You can try searching for your term within the text, because lists often have a description and captions that will contain more terms.

site:abbywinters.com inurl:"list display" intext:susie intext:standing

But this search turns up some false positives. What we need are pages that definitely contain Susie, and are definitely about standing. Many users helpfully give their lists titles that contain useful key words, so let's add a titles-only search to our query:

site:abbywinters.com inurl:"list display" intext:susie intitle:standing

Now we have a very targeted search, and you have an easy way to take advantage of the legwork that other users have done in putting together these lists.

By the way, many of these tips came from GoogleGuide.

Working With Zip Files (Windows XP)

When you download Zip files from the AW site, Windows XP will treat it like a special type of folder -- a "compressed folder" -- and let you explore it. However, you'll have more options for viewing the files if you extract them into a standard folder. Here's how to do that:

1. Find the folder in which you downloaded the Zip file. You'll see an compressed folder icon that looks like this:

2. Right-click on the compressed folder, and select Extract All...

3. This will launch the Compressed Folder Extraction Wizard, which will walk you through the process of extracting the files. Just click the Next button three times, until you see Extraction Complete.

4. When you're finished, you will see a new folder. Double-click this folder, and you will be able to view the files with the Windows Picture Viewer.

Thanks MS for that mighty fine explanation. I sure wish this info had been posted when I had all that trouble awhile back trying to download Cleo's photo set and view it as a slideshow! Anyway, if I forget now all I have to do is check out this thread. MS, you are a computer genius and seem to know all the tricks and fun programs.

Tip for using DownThemAll/Firefox to download image sets

Firefox users have access to a very handy tool for downloading images and videos from the AW site. It's called DownThemAll, and I want to share a tip on how to use it more efficiently with the AW site.

For each model profile page, there are many Zip files and video files. You probably won't want to download all the files on any given page. For example, you might want the MPG files, or the WMV files, but not both. If a model has extra-large images available, you may want to skip these and just get the regular-size images.

DownThemAll lets you create filters that look for filename patterns and download only the files you want. Here's how to set up a filter that gets image sets and videos in one click:
1. From the Firefox menu, select Tools, DownThemAll, Preferences...

2. Select the Filters tab and press Add New Filter.
3. Enter a name for the filter in the field marked Caption and check the box marked Reg. Ex.
4. In the box marked Filtered extensions, enter:
/http:\/\/(.*\/){5}(backstage_|d_|dr_|g_|m_|r_|.+imgset)|http:\/\/(.*\/){5}[a-z]+\.zip$|wmv$/
5. Close the Filters dialog box.
You now have a filter that will download all image set Zip files (except for extra-large images) and all WMV files in a single operation. To use it, let's go to Krystelle's profile, which has three image sets, including one extra-large, and one video in both MPG and WMV formats. From the Firefox menu, select Tools, DownThemAll, DownThemAll!... and a list of all downloadable files will appear.

Select the checkbox for the filter you created, and the number of files selected to download will appear in the lower left-hand corner: In this case, two image sets (the regular and the dressing room) plus one WMV file -- exactly what I want.

Here are some filters for other common needs (note: The character separating the items in parentheses is the character next to the curly brackets {} on most keyboards):

To get the MPG files instead of the WMV files, replace the WMV near the end of the filter string:
/http:\/\/(.*\/){5}(backstage_|d_|dr_|g_|m_|r_|.+imgset)|http:\/\/(.*\/){5}[a-z]+\.zip$|mpg$/

To skip Dressing Room sets, remove the dr_| from the filter string:
/http:\/\/(.*\/){5}(backstage_|d_|g_|m_|r_|.+imgset)|http:\/\/(.*\/){5}[a-z]+\.zip$|wmv$/

To get extra-large sets instead of the regular-size sets, use this filter string:
/http:\/\/(.*\/){5}(dr_|xl_|el_)|wmv$/
Last edited by MightySpork; 1 January 2008, 05:51 AM. Reason: Some extra-large sets begin with "el" instead of "xl"

Quick question... Once apon a time I used to click on a "thumb" from a models imageset and it would open in a new window "Inernet Explorer page" so I could toggle between the picture I "opened" and the models imageset, which I could then double click on the next thumb and it to would open in a new window ""Inernet Explorer page" so I can toggle between the two picture I "opened" and the modelsimageset.

I thought I have my setting correctly done for this to happen but it is now opening the picture in the same "Inernet Explorer page" so no toggle I must go back to see the models image set page and lose the open picture unless I double click on that then it will open into a new window ""Inernet Explorer page".

If there is anyone out there that I have not totally confused could someone please guide me...

Following is my current set up from MYAW page... I gather that is where this is done.

Pinkeyes, Lesley's advice doesn't probably help, at least it doesn't work for me.

I like to go through the sets same way as you but now I have to press shift when I click (no need to double click ) and then the picture opens up in a new page.

I hope this helps you.

The 'open in new window' setting does not seem to have any effect indeed. I think I reported that bug months ago, wondering if anybody even used that setting

The 'direct' setting only affects if an image is opened within a nice AW page with menu's and such or just as a bare .jpg picture. Neither gives you a new window, making 'direct' fairly useless to me 'cos you HAVE to use back to get any navigation back

Doubtfull. If you open two or more pictures from a still set, do you end up with 2 or more new windows? Unless your Mac is the new mindreader model ?
