    Experiment - DivX 5.1

    Hi guys

DivX has upgraded its version to 5.1. The changes made to it are seriously major, as these things go. I wish to conduct an experiment, therefore, to make sure that you guys can play it okay. There have been murmurs that not everyone is experiencing joy with it.

Now this is open to all users, but really I want people using earlier versions of DivX (5.05 and below for PCs, 5.07 and below for Macs). And here's what I need to know from you:

    A) Your system specs, incl OS, Memory, HDD space - esp if you are on a Mac
    B) Did the DivX 5.05 vids (all the recent ones for at least the last two months) work for you okay?
    C) Does the video linked below work for you now?

    Here's the clip - 2.7Mb.

Please note, this is not a streaming video, download it to your HDD first.

I look forward to hearing what's what.

How do Vid Dude, just downloaded the new player and experimental vid and everything has worked fine, I've played all the recent vids and quite a few of the old ones and had no probs.

For your records my specs are:

      A: Win2000, P4 2.53GHz, 528 ram, 80gb HDD, ASUS V9280S graphics card
      B: All vids worked fine
C: Viewed the vid with DivX Player 2.5 and Windows Media Player 9 series and the basic Windows Player and had no probs.

        Ok, got the new codec
Can play vids since about 1/4/03 in Player 2.5 but prior to that I get error message- parseVBR() unknown exception caught
But, can now play all vids in WMP (ver 8) whereas previously all I got was sound and the visualisations..
        Go figure....

This works fine for me. System specs are:

          A) Linux (Debian), 1GB RAM, 300GB HDD, ABIT GeForce4 video card.
          B) All DivX and Mpeg Movies on the site work perfectly. I use MPlayer and Totem to view files at upto 1600x1200 full sreen, with no playback issues at all.
          c) The video link works fine.

For users of Mac OSX, have a look at MPlayer for OSX at http://mplayerosx.sourceforge.net/

                    Right.

My computer was first-class when I bought it, but that was five years ago...

                    A) I have Windows98, 128mb RAM, I forget the HDD, but it's on the low end of the gigabytes spectrum (8? 16? something like that).

                    B) I have viewed your .avi files before (if I can download them) on DivX 5.05 and Windows Media Player 7 with no problems at all.

                    C) I viewed your sample, and jamievid3, on DivX 5.1 with no troubles. However, gilvid4, which played just fine for me on DivX 5.5 and WMP7, is terribly choppy on DivX 5.1. The audio is continuous, but the video constantly pauses for a fraction of a second then jumps ahead, giving the impression of really bad stop-motion animation.

                      Hi Vid Dude

You don't seem to have any Macs yet - so here's one:

                      A) Mac G4 - MAC OS 9.1 - 512Mb - 50GB (ish)
                      B) Yes - I downloaded the Morgan one as AVI today though I usually go for the MPEG. It was fine
                      C) Yes it was fine - didn't need to get any new codec. Sound was good. This is with DivX 5.0 Alpha3.

                      I hope this is useful

Here's another Mac config for you Vidman.

                          A) Mac G4 Quicksilver 733Mhz, Mac OS X 10.2.6 384 Mb - 40Gb
                          B) Not sure, don't download Avi, can check if you want.
                          C) Yes the vid worked fine with both the 3ivx D4 4.0.4 (http://www.3ivx.com/download/macos.html) and DivX 5.0.6

I'm using DivX Pro 5.1 on a dual-proc Athlon under Windows 2000 SP4, with a gig of RAM and a Matrox G450 dual-head, in dual-head mode. [I win the award for best computer.]

I'm unable to play any videos using WMP9; I get audio but complaints about a missing video device and no video. I used to be able to queue them in. This goes for both older videos (Alicia D 5, Ally 2, Eva 2, Maria 4), and newer ones (Zana 1).

In the DivX 5.1 player, these worked:
                            Alicia D 5, Eva 2, Zana 1.
Ally 2 and Maria 4 both produced errors that said "AviPlayModel:arseVBR() unknown exception caught"

                            How helpful.

Your test vid of Jamie played correctly in both WMP9 and DivX players. img tag disable, use attachment mgr/system to add images to postshttp://www.abbywinters.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif

Abby has a Matrox Parhelion. You lose!

As for the two older videos not playing, my guess is that you probably do have some crucial little file missing. The best I can offer (if this matters to you) is perhaps downloading the Nimo Codec Pack, found here.

                              Good luck

Now that we've finished playing who's got the biggest, I've been checking out a few more of the vids.

The vids Rnbwpnt points out which have the error msge are the old vids which don't work in the new DivX 2.5 player but they still work in all of the WM Players. I've just checked all the vids from May 21st onwards and they all work fine in the new DivX player.

Example being, the old avi vids of Julie S will not work in the new player but work fine in the WMP, but the new vid of her peeing works in the new DivX player.

Win98, Pentium 400, 128MB ram, 40 GB HD, Rage IIC video, using player 2.1. Sorta like DaffyDD's.

                                  Looks great.

Someone will have to tell me how to find which version of Divx I have.

Is there any knowledge/workaround on the DivX Player's AviPlayModel:arseVBR() unknown exception caught ?

I never had that problem with the previous version of DivX but I upgraded last week to the latest version.

I tested it on a Win98SE and WinME. Both have the same problem although the test file (http://www.abbywinters.com/divx5_1.avi) works fine. I could also test it on a Win 2000 or Win XP if required.

                                      Thanks

Tech dude, it's only the older vids that come up with that message, none of the newer vids do, also if you have all the codecs the WMP still plays them fine. Check out my post from Sept 13th.

I guess I am lucky, I have not had any problems with the vids.
Played the new vids today of Jamie and Suzanna, (good stuff).
Played both the avi and mpg and could not tell any difference in the quality.
The file sizes are close to the same though. I have a couple of windows machines
that are not worth mentioning here.
