I want to amend this a little bit. I am speaking of anal play as a 'demonstration sport' (porn), not as an intimate activity. In my experience there are a growing number of sophisticated women that are into porn as well. It's been a while, but I saw something that made me return to this topic. A recent Dutch survey by the STD/AIDS Foundation (4901 people between the ages of 12-25 were interviewed about their sexual behavior) came up with these results for anal sex (we're not talking about 'anal play' here, we're talking about anal penetration):

In the 21-25 year category, 27% has had anal sex, in the 18-21 year category, it's 16%. Other categories: 12-15y: 4%, 15-18y: 8%. Total percentage for the entire survey population: 15%.

Additional data: 55% of the heterosexual boys and 71% of the girls engaging in anal sex do not use a condom during anal sex ever.

One in six girls (16,3%) have been forced to perform sexual actions; only 5% of the boys report that.

I don't believe for a second that these percentages indicate some spontaneous and happy new trend. I think we're seeing present-day hardcore porn (so extremely out of ideas that anal sex is now matter-of-fact and in the mainstream - some countries do not even produce porn without anal penetration anymore) making inroads on regular sexuality.
