For those of you not familiar with The Straight Dope, I can highly recommend it as a place to read the most fascinating stuff on the net. It's partly a Q&A place, where Cecil, who has been Fighting Ignorance since 1973, answers question sent in. These are diverse and fascinating - here's a quick sample of some (there are thousands):
o Were 40% of Native American women forcibly sterilized in the 1970s?
o Is uranium added to false teeth to give them a natural glow?
o How can I get my, uh, hot photos developed?
o Why is, um, fecal matter brown?
o Who decided red means "stop" and green means "go"?
o Why are Europe and Asia considered separate continents? o What's a continent, anyway?
Cecil has a sharp wit and very amusing style, especially with people who disagree with him (usually cos their research into the matter was sloppy).
The other part of the site are the discussion boards, one of the largest and most active on the internet, apparently. They have several topics, and one of them is Great Debates. They had there recently a thread on "Ask the gay guy...", where you could ask those questions you always wanted answered, but were afraid to ask (fascinating reading, I tell you, regardless of your gender or sexual orientation).
I have just started a thread called "Ask the pornographer...", giving a bit of a bio about myself, and opened it up for discussion. It will be interesting to see how it fares - it may flop entirely. If you have an opinion or a question, head on over there and share it (you need to register to post, tho).
