    MyAW Pref's to Persist

    Hi Guys,

    Like the new MyAW functionality.

I've played with the list length and viewing prefs which I like but I wondered if there is anyway for them to persist from session to session.

And unfortunately cookies don't help me as the computer is scrubbed each night.

Great to see you adding new features.

    Cheers,

    Ch.

    No.

Because that's what cookies are for - so things persist from session to session. If you remove that basic functionality then you lose the function.

      Fair enough.

      Just thought I'd ask.

Sorry, just continuing that train of thought for a moment.

I do understand the role of cookies in holding small bits of config and data, session key's etc from session to session but I think that in general (and not necessarily in this instance) it is worth remembering that members may access your website differently than people generally access websites.

I can't believe I'm the only member who likes to cover their tracks.

Please don't infer from this message that I'm trying to hassle you. Just giving you an idea how this member accesses your site and I imagine I'm not alone.

Yes, we know. And those people will have to enter their preferences each time. That's how it works.

Most cookies do not track. It's only the tracking cookies that the paranoid should be worried about, and really probably not even then. Removing every cookie every night is not only overkill, it's unnecessary extra work for everyone.

I think you missunderstand the target of my paranoia

Computer and firewall are perfectly well equiped to deal with external threats.

I'm more concerned with individuals who might share the computer with me.

chimmy, considered setting up differnt users ont he machine, so you log in as you and they log in as them? Pretty easy to set up,. and ideally suited to this issue you describe.

Actually, just logging out should be enough. It will remember your preferences, but you've basically prevented anyone from stumbling into the members area of the site.

Unless you think people are looking through your browser history and searching through the cache to find out where you've been. In which case, find new friends.

Mozilla/Firefox can also actually use a master password to encrypt stored passwords. You can set it, such that it will always prompt you for the password once, whenever you start up the profile. As the master password is used as the key for the encryption cipher, the passwords are unobtainable without it. I don't know if the encryption covers cookies/history, but I'd like to see it implemented if it isn't already (perhaps there might be a third-party extension made for this).

If you're using Linux, there are 1,001 ways you can cover your tracks

Finally, if you have just a shared family PC, you might like to consider purchasing a second-hand laptop for surfing AW.com; something like a Pentium III 500Mhz should be more than sufficient. My brother recently got a used P-III 1GHz laptop for $AUD450. If you're not familiar with setting up internet access sharing for multiple networked PCs, drop me a PM, I can help you out.

But the main advantage of using Linux is that you don't have to. :-)

FWIW, Firefox can do the same thing under Windows as I recall. Just make sure you close Firefox every time, and when it's opened back up, it will require the master password for any saved logins or protected certificates.

I prefer choosing which cookies I accept and which I don't over purging cookies periodically.

The new netscape has a Tools/Options/Privacy screen like Firefox's but one of the differences is that under each individual area, History, Saved Information, etc., is a check box that you can check that tells netscape to erase everything in that area when you close your browser. Firefox may have it in a different spot, I don't know.

this site is getting too complicated and my simpleton mind is challenged, how large is the R&D dept at AW?; you are on the frontier of website design. i am overwhelmed by this site. the available screen real estate is being exploited in so many ways. i am glad you dont have things that blink or move. its all done very tastefully and not over commercialized.

i think the Abby site of the future will have a pic section where the pics move when highlighted. like mini movies in the pic section. how about an interview section when models are being screened for the site (with their permission of course) - so cool to see Christiana's first moments with abby or rosanna, etc. 'Hi, I am Abby, welcome to AW, can i get you something? ...... '

                          the evolutionary trail is fun

the camera i guess would have to take pics and then have video in between; this would be so cool to see. especially the backstage pics being brought to life. i try to figure out what people are saying when i see the pics, but its hard to do.

yea, what happened was Gates gave Abby an offer($) she couldn't refuse and bought AW. Pretty soon, when you a buy a new computer, there will be a sticker on it that says, "Designed for Abbywinters".

What does "add items to lists-noisy/quiet" mean? Do I need to turn down my speakers when I am making a list?

"Noisy" means that when you add a new item to your list, it shows you a new page with the item, the list, and other details. "Quiet" will minimise those details and send you to just the list.

actually, I do not think it even sends you to the list, it just adds the item and leaves you were you were.

Here's some text that could ideally supplement the images:

The Add items to lists option, in the MyAW user preferences page, determines the behaviour that follows when an item is added to a user's list.

The state of this option is stored as a browser cookie, and any changes take effect instantly. If you need to frequently alternate between the two behaviours, you may leave a separate MyAW browser window or tab open, while you search through the model galleries, and switch back to this window whenever you need to toggle the setting.

Both modes will commit the item to your list immediately; should you add an item in error, you will need to use the list editor page to remove the unwanted item.

Add items to lists: Noisy mode

In this mode, you will be taken to the list editor page, after adding an item to one of your lists.

Here, you will have an opportunity to edit the description for this item in your list, as well as the overall list title, summary, public/private status and feature highlight image (this is the image that will be displayed for your list when other members browse the public list gallery). You may also delete items from your list.

If you have not altered any fields on the list editor page, and wish to return to the model profile page, follow the Return to... link supplied. Otherwise, if you have made changes to the item description or list features, then you will need to either commit the changes by clicking on the Save changes... button, or abandon them by clicking Cancel changes.... Both these buttons return you to the model profile page.

Add items to lists: Quiet mode

This setting will simply display a confirmation notice when you add an item to a list; you may proceed to browse around the model galleries as normal.

                                                        Which setting should I use?

Use Noisy mode when you are building a list that you plan to make public. It's considered good practice to write a separate description for each item, if you can; this adds an individualistic flavour to your list.

Use Quiet mode when you are building an exclusively private list, such as a reminder of imagesets/videos to download.
Oh, and if you're wondering who the heck Admiral_Bob is, it's my AW.com username, because I wasn't allowed to renew as Diablo. Oh, the confusion!
