    MessageBoard Search Question

Some time ago i had a question concerning why many times when I search for something, it doesn't find it even though I know it's there. I just ran into this problem again I believe. If you look at the last post (by minatour) in the porn politcs thread you, will see that minatour quoted me from an earlier post in the thread. I cut and pasted what I said from his post(without the smiley). Here is what I searched on: "That judge would be taking away one of the rights that I now enjoy. (And enjoy very much!!)"

Here, while posting this I manually added the double quotes. I searched without the double quotes and with the double quotes but found nothing. What am I doing wrong?

BTW, does it matter whether you put the double quotes in? I almost always do but I know some search engines don't require it. Thanks.

I think the search engine of the boards is pretty inefficient.

I'm not sure that it is possible to search for entire sentences, I never got a result with that.

You're better off using Google if you need to search for anything more than a few words; just prefix your query with site:forums.abbywinters.com.

vBulletin uses MySQL's full-text indexing feature, which is fast, but lousy, and it doesn't index words that are less than three letters long (which made it difficult when I was compiling Intimate Moments quotes). I'm pretty sure vB just looks for posts that contain all of the words mentioned, regardless of order, without taking grammatical structure into consideration.

"lousy" is the word I was searching for.

Search doesn't look inside quoted text inside a post. Is that what you were trying to do?

                Vid Dude,
Well, I tried it both ways with and without quotes on the whole sentence and it didn't work. After Luxman and Diablo's post, I searched on just the first 3 or 4 words and I got some results back and found it without problem.

It's good to know, though, that it doesn't look inside double quotes because I usually put those in my search when searching for a literal.

                Thanks again,

                  Vid Dude,
I didn't answer the question you asked. No I wasn't searching for quoted text. I did a "copy" from quoted text and used that to post it in a search.

                    At least not regarding thread-searching.

What also may have happened is an edit to the original text after it was quoted, or an edit to the quote itself (perhaps to fix spelling).
